Assistant Professor Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant professor in Maine?
Becoming an assistant professor in Maine requires completing a terminal degree in your discipline, most commonly a PhD, MFA, or equivalent professional doctorate. Maine institutions follow national academic hiring norms, posting positions through national searches. No state-issued license is required for most faculty roles, though assistant professors in nursing education must hold an active Maine Registered Nurse license issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing before teaching clinical coursework.
Which companies hire assistant professors in Maine?
Maine assistant professor roles are posted by University of Maine, Central Maine Healthcare, and University of New England and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's hiring is anchored by its public university system and small, well-resourced liberal arts colleges that conduct national faculty searches each fall and spring cycle.
Which Maine cities have the most assistant professor jobs?
Orono, Lewiston, and Bangor are the Maine cities with the most assistant professor openings. Orono leads because it is home to the flagship University of Maine campus, while Portland's growing university and medical education presence drives demand there, and Lewiston-Auburn reflects the combined faculty hiring of Bates College and Central Maine Medical Center's academic programs.
Are there remote assistant professor jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they are rare. About 0% of assistant professor openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most faculty roles require in-person teaching, lab supervision, and student advising. The sub-set most likely to include remote or hybrid arrangements is online program faculty and certain continuing education or professional studies positions at Maine institutions that have built out distance-learning divisions.
How can I get hired as a assistant professor in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a visiting assistant professor or lecturer appointment, which Maine institutions regularly use to fill gaps and evaluate candidates for future tenure-track roles. The University of Maine System and smaller colleges such as the University of New England frequently post one-year visiting positions that do not require an extensive publication record. Candidates can strengthen their profile by completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Maine, building a teaching portfolio from graduate-level instruction, or moving laterally from a full-time instructor or adjunct role at a Maine community college such as Southern Maine Community College.
