Assistant Professor Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant professor in Wisconsin?
Becoming an assistant professor in Wisconsin requires earning a terminal degree in your field, typically a Ph.D. or M.F.A., from an accredited institution. Wisconsin does not require a state-issued faculty license, but positions at nursing and health sciences programs may expect candidates to hold or be eligible for a Wisconsin professional license in their clinical area. Most searches require a complete application with a cover letter, research statement, teaching portfolio, and references submitted directly to the hiring institution.
Which companies hire assistant professors in Wisconsin?
Employers hiring assistant professors in Wisconsin right now include Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin–Madison, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Wisconsin's large public university system and growing number of private liberal arts colleges make it one of the more active faculty hiring markets in the Midwest.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most assistant professor jobs?
Milwaukee, Madison, and Eau Claire have the most assistant professor openings in Wisconsin. Madison dominates due to the flagship University of Wisconsin campus and affiliated research institutes, Milwaukee draws consistent hiring from Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and the UW-Milwaukee campus, and Green Bay reflects regional demand tied to UW-Green Bay and healthcare education programs serving northeast Wisconsin.
Are there remote assistant professor jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, but they're rare. About 8% of assistant professor openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the on-campus nature of most faculty roles. The positions most likely to offer remote or online delivery are in instructional design, distance education programs, and fully online degree programs, where Wisconsin institutions have expanded significantly in recent years.
How can I get hired as a assistant professor in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a visiting assistant professor or lecturer appointment, which large Wisconsin institutions like the UW system campuses and Marquette University post regularly for candidates who have completed doctoral coursework but not yet defended. Postdoctoral research positions at UW-Madison and the Medical College of Wisconsin can also bridge into tenure-track roles. Candidates without a completed degree gain an edge by assembling a strong teaching portfolio, securing a dissertation completion fellowship, and applying to regional comprehensives and community college instructor roles as a lateral entry point.
