Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Wisconsin?
Vocational rehabilitation counselors in Wisconsin typically need a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a closely related counseling field. For positions with the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, counselors must meet federal Comprehensive System of Personnel Development standards, which require a master's degree and often the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential issued by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. Private and nonprofit employers in Wisconsin follow similar educational expectations and frequently require or strongly prefer CRC credentialing.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Wisconsin?
Companies currently hiring vocational rehabilitation counselors in Wisconsin include ProHealth Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin, UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital, and Emplify Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Wisconsin's state-funded vocational rehabilitation system and its network of community rehabilitation providers together make up the largest and most stable segment of consistent hiring across the state.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Waukesha, Madison, and Onalaska consistently post the most vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in Wisconsin. Milwaukee and Madison lead because they host the densest concentration of DVR district offices, hospital-based rehabilitation programs, and nonprofit disability services organizations, while Green Bay anchors demand in the northeast through its regional hospital systems and community service providers.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, but they are limited. The role requires in-person client meetings, site visits with employers, and hands-on assessments, which keeps most positions on-site or hybrid rather than fully remote. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the most remote-eligible work concentrated in intake coordination, case documentation review, and telehealth counseling components.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for rehabilitation counselor trainee or counselor-in-training positions within the Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, which accepts candidates who are currently completing a qualifying master's degree program. Internship placements through accredited Wisconsin counseling programs at UW-Madison, UW-Stout, and UW-Milwaukee frequently convert to full hiring opportunities. Adjacent roles such as job developer, employment specialist, or case manager at a community rehabilitation provider give candidates direct Wisconsin VR system exposure and a practical edge when applying for full counselor openings.
