Student Services Counselor Jobs in Wisconsin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a student services counselor in Wisconsin?
The path depends on whether you work in K-12 or higher education. For K-12, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction requires a school counselor license, which calls for a master's degree in school counseling from an accredited program and completion of a supervised practicum. For college and university advising roles, a master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or counseling is the standard expectation, though some entry-level positions accept a bachelor's degree with relevant experience.
Which companies hire student services counselors in Wisconsin?
Employers hiring student services counselors in Wisconsin right now include University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, via, and Versiti, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The University of Wisconsin System campuses, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Wisconsin's technical college network are among the most consistent sources of openings across the state.
Which Wisconsin cities have the most student services counselor jobs?
The cities with the most student services counselor openings in Wisconsin are Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Madison leads because it is home to the flagship UW-Madison campus and a dense cluster of public agencies, while Milwaukee's large K-12 district and several private colleges drive substantial volume, and Green Bay's growing technical college enrollment and regional school districts round out demand.
Are there remote student services counselor jobs in Wisconsin?
Yes, but they're limited, because most student services counselor work is relationship-driven and relies on in-person advising, campus presence, or school building access. About 45% of student services counselor openings tied to Wisconsin are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles tend to be concentrated in online program advising and career coaching rather than traditional academic or school-based counseling.
How can I get hired as a student services counselor in Wisconsin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a graduate assistantship or practicum placement at a University of Wisconsin System campus, which provides supervised experience while you complete your degree. Many Wisconsin technical colleges and community colleges also hire part-time academic advisors who transition into full counselor roles. Lateral moves from roles like residence life coordinator, academic tutor, or student success coach at institutions such as Madison College or Waukesha County Technical College are a proven door-opener, and completing the DPI school counselor licensure process gives K-12 candidates a clear credential advantage.
Where can I find and apply to student services counselor jobs in Wisconsin?
