Special Education Teacher Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a special education teacher in Maine?
You become a special education teacher in Maine by earning at least a bachelor's degree in special education and obtaining certification through the Maine Department of Education. Maine issues a Special Education Certification (endorsement codes 282 and 282.1) through its educator licensing office. Candidates must complete an approved preparation program, pass required Praxis exams, and submit an application to the Maine DOE. Out-of-state certified teachers may apply for a comparable Maine certificate through reciprocity review.
How much do special education teachers make in Maine?
Special education teachers in Maine earn a median of about $60,680 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,050 for the lowest 10% to over $74,870 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire special education teachers in Maine?
Employers hiring special education teachers in Maine right now include RSU 21, Regional School Unit 57, and Maine School Administrative District # 75, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine also sees steady hiring from regional educational collaboratives and residential treatment facilities that serve students with complex needs.
Which Maine cities have the most special education teacher jobs?
The cities with the most special education teacher openings in Maine are Kennebunk, Waterboro, and Portland. Portland dominates as the state's largest urban district, while Bangor anchors hiring across Penobscot County and Lewiston-Auburn draws openings through a dense cluster of public schools and nonprofit service providers that support high-need student populations in Androscoggin County.
Are there remote special education teacher jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. Special education teaching is a hands-on, legally mandated in-person role for most students, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 0% of special education teacher openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve evaluation services, IEP consulting, or itinerant specialist work rather than direct classroom instruction.
How can I get hired as a special education teacher in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a paraeducator or educational technician role within a Maine public school district, which provides direct classroom experience alongside licensed teachers. Portland Public Schools, RSU districts throughout central Maine, and residential programs like Spurwink and NFI North regularly hire educational technicians without prior teaching experience. Completing student teaching in Maine, earning your Maine DOE certification early, and building familiarity with IEP software strengthens any application for a first teaching position.
Where can I find and apply to special education teacher jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to special education teacher jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Maine school districts, educational collaboratives, and nonprofit providers. Search the listings to find roles that match your certification, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
