Education Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education specialist in California?
To become an education specialist in California, you must earn a California Education Specialist Instruction Credential through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, or CTC. This requires completing a CTC-approved preparation program, passing the California Subject Examinations for Teachers, and completing student teaching in a special education setting. Most positions require at least a bachelor's degree, and many districts prefer candidates with a master's degree in special education or a closely related field.
Which companies hire education specialists in California?
Employers hiring education specialists in California right now include Kipp Nashville, San Francisco Unified School District, and UC Davis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large public school districts, county offices of education, and charter networks are consistently the most active sources of education specialist openings across the state.
Which California cities have the most education specialist jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Davis have the most education specialist openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to the sheer size of LAUSD and the density of charter networks and county education offices in the region, while Sacramento's role as the state capital concentrates district and policy-level positions, and San Diego's large unified district and military-connected student population drive steady demand in the south.
Are there remote education specialist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since most education specialist roles involve direct student contact, IEP meetings, and in-classroom support. About 10% of education specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote-eligible roles most often found in curriculum development, instructional coaching, and edtech program coordination rather than direct special education services.
How can I get hired as a education specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying as a special education paraprofessional or instructional aide at a California school district while completing your CTC-approved credential program. Large districts like Los Angeles Unified, Fresno Unified, and San Francisco Unified regularly hire instructional assistants who are working toward their Education Specialist credential, and these roles provide the supervised classroom hours required for credentialing. Completing your student teaching placement within a California district and securing a provisional internship credential from the CTC can accelerate hiring before you finish your full program.
Where can I find and apply to education specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to education specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from school districts, county offices of education, and other employers. Find the roles that fit your credential level and experience, then apply directly to the ones that match.
