Substitute Teacher Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a substitute teacher in California?
You become a substitute teacher in California by obtaining a permit through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, known as the CTC. The most common starting point is the 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, which requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. You apply directly through the CTC's online portal, complete a Live Scan fingerprint background check, and submit proof of your degree. Once your permit is issued, individual school districts manage their own hiring and onboarding processes.
How much do substitute teachers make in California?
Substitute teachers in California earn a median of about $60,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,040 for the lowest 10% to over $78,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire substitute teachers in California?
Employers hiring substitute teachers in California right now include Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and Hitachi High-Tech America, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and the scale of its public school system mean that large urban districts post substitute openings year-round, with demand spiking at the start of each semester.
Which California cities have the most substitute teacher jobs?
The California cities with the most substitute teacher openings are Los Angeles, Redwood City, and San Diego. Los Angeles dominates by volume simply because of the size of LAUSD, which is the second-largest school district in the United States, while San Diego and Sacramento reflect the large district infrastructure and population density that keep their substitute rosters in constant need of filling.
Are there remote substitute teacher jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Substitute teaching is an inherently on-site role, with the vast majority of assignments requiring physical presence in a classroom. About 0% of substitute teacher openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in virtual charter schools or online independent study programs that operate under California's public school framework.
How can I get hired as a substitute teacher in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to a large urban district, such as Los Angeles Unified or Sacramento City Unified, both of which regularly hire substitutes with a newly issued CTC 30-Day Permit and no prior classroom experience. Completing a short paraprofessional or instructional aide role within a California district first is a strong lateral move that makes your application more competitive. Having bilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish, or completing coursework in special education gives candidates a measurable edge in California's hiring pools.
Where can I find and apply to substitute teacher jobs in California?
You can find and apply to substitute teacher jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California districts and schools. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your credential level and preferred location, and apply directly to each position.
