Electrical Maintenance Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical maintenance technician in Texas?
The most direct path in Texas is completing a licensed electrical apprenticeship through a program registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, known as TDLR, which oversees electrical licensing in the state. Candidates typically pursue a journeyman electrician license through TDLR after logging required hours and passing the state exam. An associate degree in industrial technology or electronics from a Texas community college, such as Houston Community College or San Antonio College, also strengthens candidacy considerably.
How much do electrical maintenance technicians make in Texas?
Electrical maintenance technicians in Texas earn a median of about $74,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,560 for the lowest 10% to over $109,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical maintenance technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring electrical maintenance technicians in Texas right now include Cushman & Wakefield, Walmart, and EPS, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's heavy concentration of petrochemical plants, refineries, and aerospace manufacturing facilities means demand from large industrial operators remains consistent throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most electrical maintenance technician jobs?
Houston, El Paso, and San Antonio have the most electrical maintenance technician openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its density of refineries, chemical plants, and energy infrastructure along the Gulf Coast, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws hiring from large manufacturing campuses and aerospace contractors, and San Antonio's military installations and growing industrial base anchor steady demand in that market.
Are there remote electrical maintenance technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Electrical maintenance technician work is fundamentally hands-on and tied to physical equipment, so most roles require on-site presence. About 6% of electrical maintenance technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in technical support, controls engineering consulting, or remote monitoring roles rather than traditional maintenance work.
How can I get hired as a electrical maintenance technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an apprentice electrician or maintenance helper role, which large Texas industrial employers and electrical contractors hire for without requiring prior experience. Companies in Houston's petrochemical corridor and the Dallas manufacturing corridor routinely bring on apprentice-level candidates through TDLR-registered apprenticeship programs. Earning a TDLR apprentice electrician registration, completing courses at a Texas community college, and building familiarity with basic PLC software gives candidates a clear edge over other applicants.
