Electrician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrician in California?
Electricians in California must hold a state-issued certification from the California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. The most common path is completing a multi-year apprenticeship through a program registered with the state, such as those affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, then passing the California General Electrician or Residential Electrician certification exam. A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum education requirement.
How much do electricians make in California?
Electricians in California earn a median of about $76,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,800 for the lowest 10% to over $140,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electricians in California?
Employers hiring electricians in California right now include Apple, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large-scale commercial construction, data center development, and public university facilities keeps a consistent roster of regional and national electrical contractors actively staffing licensed trades throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most electrician jobs?
Santa Clara, San Jose, and Sunnyvale have the most electrician openings in California. Los Angeles generates the largest volume due to its scale of commercial construction and entertainment infrastructure, while San Francisco and Sacramento see strong demand from tech campus buildouts, state government facilities, and ongoing transit electrification projects that draw both union and non-union contractors.
Are there remote electrician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Electrician work is hands-on and site-dependent by nature, so the overwhelming majority of openings require physical presence on a job site. About 11% of electrician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve estimating, project coordination, or inspection roles rather than installation work.
How can I get hired as a electrician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a state-registered pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship program, such as those run through IBEW local unions or the National Electrical Contractors Association chapters based in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Sacramento. Large California contractors like Rosendin Electric and Cupertino Electric hire apprentice-level candidates into structured multi-year programs. Obtaining your California ET-1 Trainee Certification before applying signals seriousness and makes you eligible to work under a licensed journeyman immediately.
Where can I find and apply to electrician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to electrician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers hiring now. Search the listings to see roles that match your certification level, specialty, and preferred location across the state, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
