Working across the security ecosystem, you will develop roadmaps, influence technology decisions, and translate complex security challenges into effective, scalable solutions that improve business and security outcomes.
This role requires both strategic leadership and hands-on technical execution.
THE PERSON
In addition to broad security expertise, you have demonstrated experience developing custom capabilities, including automation, integrations, analytics, workflows, and AI-enabled tooling. You understand when to buy, when to extend existing platforms, and when building a solution delivers a meaningful advantage.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Define and lead the enterprise security technology strategy and roadmap.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing security capabilities and identify opportunities to improve coverage, efficiency, and resilience.
- Drive technology selection, integration, and optimization across the security ecosystem.
- Design and develop custom security solutions, automation, integrations, and AI-enabled capabilities where commercial products do not adequately meet business or security requirements.
- Establish a practical build-versus-buy strategy and lead implementation efforts when custom development is the preferred approach.
- Lead initiatives that leverage AI to enhance security operations, threat detection, security analytics, and exposure management.
- Establish and evolve security controls, governance, and operational practices that support enterprise AI and agentic systems.
- Partner with Security Architecture, Cyber Defense, Security Platform Operations, IT, and GRC teams to deliver scalable security capabilities.
- Translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights and recommendations for leadership and key stakeholders.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience leading security engineering programs, security platform strategy, or enterprise security technology initiatives.
- Demonstrated track record of designing and building custom security solutions that delivered measurable operational or risk-reduction outcomes.
- Strong software engineering and automation experience, including development of security applications, integrations, workflows, data pipelines, analytics platforms, or AI-powered capabilities.
- Demonstrated experience building solutions that leverage security telemetry, operational data, and analytics to generate actionable insights, enhance detection and response capabilities, and enable data-informed security decisions.
- Proven ability to define security technology roadmaps and drive implementation from concept through operational adoption.
- Experience operating within large, complex, or rapidly evolving enterprise environments.
- Practical experience applying AI, machine learning, or advanced analytics to security use cases.
- Familiarity with securing AI platforms, models, agents, and supporting infrastructure.
- Experience working with security telemetry, data pipelines, analytics platforms, or security data engineering.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with security architects and engineering teams to translate strategy into implementation.

Engineering Director Jobs in Austin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering director job in Austin?
The strongest path into an engineering director role in Austin runs through the city's semiconductor, enterprise software, and clean energy sectors, which generate the most consistent demand. Employers in the Domain and the East Austin corridor tend to hire directors with a combination of hands-on technical depth and demonstrated team-building experience. Candidates who have led multi-disciplinary teams and can speak to product-engineering collaboration have a clear edge in Austin's market.
Which companies hire engineering directors in Austin?
Companies currently hiring engineering directors in Austin include Visa, Vectra AI, and CVS Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's mix of established semiconductor firms, high-growth SaaS companies, and expanding clean energy operations means engineering director openings appear across both large enterprises and well-funded mid-size companies.
Are there remote engineering director jobs in Austin?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for this role since engineering directors typically need to be present for team standups, cross-functional planning, and facilities oversight. About 44% of engineering director openings tied to Austin are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The remote-eligible share tends to cluster in software platform and cloud infrastructure roles rather than hardware or manufacturing-adjacent positions.
How can I get a engineering director job in Austin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving through a senior or staff engineer role at one of Austin's high-growth SaaS or semiconductor companies, where strong individual contributors are regularly promoted into engineering management. Austin-based companies such as mid-size fintech and defense tech firms frequently hire engineering managers as a bridge role before the director level. Building visibility through local IEEE Austin chapter events and university partnerships with UT Austin can also open early-career leadership doors.
Which industries hire the most engineering directors in Austin?
The sectors hiring the most engineering directors in Austin are Electronics & Hardware, Technology & Software, and Insurance, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's sustained growth as a semiconductor hub, combined with its expanding enterprise software ecosystem and a wave of clean energy investment along the I-35 corridor, keeps engineering director demand concentrated in these industries.
