Engineering Team Lead Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering team lead in Illinois?
Most engineering team leads in Illinois reach the role by building several years of individual contributor experience before moving into a lead position. Illinois does not require a specific state license to hold the title, though engineers working in licensed disciplines such as structural or civil engineering may need a Professional Engineer registration through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Employers typically look for a bachelor's in engineering and a record of technical ownership before promoting into team lead roles.
How much do engineering team leads make in Illinois?
Engineering team leads in Illinois earn a median of about $163,610 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $112,090 for the lowest 10% to over $231,880 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire engineering team leads in Illinois?
Employers hiring engineering team leads in Illinois right now include Legrand, Sangoma, and Loma Systems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of manufacturing headquarters, defense contractors, and enterprise tech firms means hiring is spread across both the Chicago metro and downstate industrial centers like Peoria and Decatur.
Which Illinois cities have the most engineering team lead jobs?
Chicago, Sullivan, and Carol Stream have the most engineering team lead openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the largest share through its dense base of enterprise software companies, aerospace suppliers, and financial technology firms, while Peoria and Rockford reflect the strong manufacturing and industrial automation presence anchored by employers like Caterpillar and major automotive suppliers operating in those corridors.
Are there remote engineering team lead jobs in Illinois?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the discipline. About 100% of engineering team lead openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the remote share concentrated in software and platform engineering leadership where hands-on lab or factory floor presence is not required. Leads in manufacturing, industrial automation, and hardware engineering almost always require regular on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a engineering team lead in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a strong individual contributor role into a formal lead position through an internal promotion at a large Illinois employer. Companies like Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, and Abbott run structured associate and rotational engineering programs in Illinois that identify early leadership candidates. Building project ownership experience, earning a Project Management Professional credential, or taking on an informal tech lead assignment in your current role are the credentials Illinois hiring managers most consistently cite as differentiators for candidates making the transition.
Where can I find and apply to engineering team lead jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to engineering team lead jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
