Environmental Attorney Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental attorney in Hawaii?
To practice as an environmental attorney in Hawaii, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and pass the Hawaii Bar Examination, administered by the Hawaii Board of Bar Examiners under the Hawaii Supreme Court. After passing, you must complete character and fitness review and be formally admitted to the Hawaii State Bar. Specializing in environmental law often involves coursework or clerkship experience in land use, administrative law, or natural resources during or after law school.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Hawaii?
Employers hiring environmental attorneys in Hawaii right now include State of Hawaii, CAPE Environmental Management, and AECOM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's mix of state agencies, federal land management bodies, Native Hawaiian organizations, and private firms focused on land use and energy make it a distinctive market for environmental legal work.
Which Hawaii cities have the most environmental attorney jobs?
Honolulu, Island of Hawai‘i, and Oahu Island have the most environmental attorney openings in Hawaii. Honolulu dominates the market as the seat of state government, the federal district court, and the majority of Hawaii's largest law firms and regulatory agencies, while Hilo and Kailua-Kona draw openings tied to Big Island land use disputes, renewable energy projects, and conservation work on Hawaii Island.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, but they're limited. Environmental attorney work frequently requires court appearances, site visits, agency hearings, and in-person client meetings, which keeps most Hawaii roles on-site or hybrid. About 67% of environmental attorney openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote work most common in legal research, policy analysis, and document-intensive regulatory compliance roles.
How can I get hired as a environmental attorney in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a clerkship or internship with the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General's Land and Natural Resources Division or with the Office of Environmental Quality Control, both of which regularly bring in law students and new graduates. Earthjustice's Honolulu office and the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation occasionally offer entry-level associate or fellowship positions. A strong academic background in environmental or administrative law, a Chapter 343 research project, or a law review note on Hawaiian land rights can distinguish a candidate without direct practice experience.
Where can I find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to environmental attorney jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and interests, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
