Environmental Scientist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental scientist in Texas?
Most environmental scientist positions in Texas require at least a bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, or biology. Texas does not mandate a single state license for environmental scientists, but many employers prefer candidates registered with the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists as a Professional Geoscientist, particularly for subsurface and remediation work. Certifications from the National Registry of Environmental Professionals also strengthen applications for Texas roles.
How much do environmental scientists make in Texas?
Environmental scientists in Texas earn a median of about $92,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,080 for the lowest 10% to over $163,110 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental scientists in Texas?
Employers hiring environmental scientists in Texas right now include GSI Environmental, GHD, and Tetra Tech, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of petrochemical facilities, municipal water utilities, and large infrastructure contractors makes it one of the most consistent states for environmental science hiring year-round.
Which Texas cities have the most environmental scientist jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Midland have the most environmental scientist openings in Texas. Houston dominates due to its petrochemical and energy industry concentration along the Ship Channel, while Austin's growth drives demand in stormwater and land development compliance, and Dallas draws hiring from engineering consulting firms serving large commercial and infrastructure clients across North Texas.
Are there remote environmental scientist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 16% of environmental scientist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on fieldwork most roles require. Data review, report writing, and regulatory compliance coordination are the tasks most commonly performed remotely when a hybrid arrangement is offered.
How can I get hired as a environmental scientist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an environmental field technician or environmental scientist I role at a consulting firm, where fieldwork and sampling experience build quickly. Large Texas-based consultancies and engineering firms like AECOM and Arcadis hire new graduates into rotational or project-support roles. Completing coursework in TCEQ regulatory frameworks, earning a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, and gaining GIS skills before applying gives candidates a clear edge over others without prior work experience.
Where can I find and apply to environmental scientist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to environmental scientist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employer through each listing.
