Environmental Scientist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental scientist in New York?
Most environmental scientist roles in New York require at minimum a bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, or chemistry, with many employers preferring a master's for project-level work. New York does not issue a state license specifically for environmental scientists, but professionals pursuing soil and site remediation work often obtain certification through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Brownfield Cleanup Program standards. Building field hours and DEC-recognized training strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do environmental scientists make in New York?
Environmental scientists in New York earn a median of about $82,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,240 for the lowest 10% to over $139,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire environmental scientists in New York?
Employers hiring environmental scientists in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Terracon Consultants, and Brookhaven National Laboratory, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's mix of large engineering consultancies, public utilities, and state and municipal agencies means openings appear across both the private sector and government, with consulting firms consistently posting the highest volume.
Which New York cities have the most environmental scientist jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Upton have the most environmental scientist openings in New York. New York City leads because of its concentration of environmental consulting firms, major infrastructure projects, and regulated industrial sites, while Albany draws demand from state agency headquarters including the DEC, and Buffalo benefits from ongoing brownfield redevelopment tied to its industrial history along the Great Lakes corridor.
Are there remote environmental scientist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Environmental science is fundamentally a field-based profession, and most New York roles require site visits, field sampling, or in-person regulatory coordination. About 6% of environmental scientist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in data analysis, report writing, GIS work, and environmental compliance review rather than hands-on fieldwork.
How can I get hired as a environmental scientist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to field technician or environmental scientist I roles at consulting firms, where you work alongside licensed professionals on site assessments and remediation projects. Large New York-based consultancies and engineering firms regularly hire new graduates into junior roles that build DEC-recognized field hours. Completing coursework or internships tied to New York's Brownfield Cleanup Program, and earning a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification before applying, gives candidates a concrete edge over the competition.
Where can I find and apply to environmental scientist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to environmental scientist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly through each listing.
