Geologist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a geologist in New York?
To practice professionally in New York, you need a Professional Geologist license issued by the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. Licensure requires a qualifying degree in geology or a related earth science field, documented supervised experience, and passing the Association of State Boards of Geology examinations. Many New York employers will hire unlicensed geologists who are actively working toward licensure, with full licensure expected once experience requirements are met.
How much do geologists make in New York?
Geologists in New York earn a median of about $86,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,990 for the lowest 10% to over $139,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire geologists in New York?
Employers hiring geologists in New York right now include Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists & Land Surveyors, D.P.C., LaBella Associates, and Terracon Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's strong regulatory environment around contaminated site remediation and infrastructure development means environmental and engineering consulting firms represent the largest share of ongoing geologist demand across the state.
Which New York cities have the most geologist jobs?
New York, Newburgh, and Mountainville have the most geologist openings in New York. New York City anchors demand through its large environmental consulting offices and major infrastructure projects, while Albany concentrates state agency and regulatory work tied to the DEC, and Buffalo draws openings from Great Lakes environmental work and regional engineering firms serving western New York's industrial corridor.
Are there remote geologist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Geology is a field-intensive profession, and most New York roles require on-site sampling, borehole logging, or direct site assessment work that cannot be done remotely. About 6% of geologist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically office-based data analysis, report writing, or project management roles at larger consulting firms.
How can I get hired as a geologist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a field technician or junior geologist role at an environmental consulting firm, where new graduates perform soil and water sampling under a licensed professional geologist. Large New York firms such as WSP and Arcadis regularly bring on entry-level staff through campus recruiting and summer internship pipelines. Earning your EIT designation, building GIS skills, and completing any fieldwork during your degree program all give you an edge when applying for associate geologist openings across the state.
Where can I find and apply to geologist jobs in New York?
