Tips for Your Facility Technician Job Search
List certifications before job duties
Hiring managers for facility technician roles scan for credentials first. Put HVAC EPA 608, OSHA 10 or 30, and any electrical or plumbing licenses at the top of your resume, above your work history, so they're impossible to miss.
Quantify your preventive maintenance load
Vague phrases like 'performed maintenance tasks' lose out to specifics. Describe the number of assets you managed, the frequency of your PM cycles, and any reduction in unplanned downtime you contributed to during your tenure.
Filter openings by facility type not just title
A facility technician role at a hospital runs on different systems than one at a data center or a university campus. Target postings that match the environment you know best, since employers hiring for specialized facilities weigh relevant experience heavily.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists facility technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a hands-on skills assessment
Many facility technician interviews include a practical walk-through or a troubleshooting scenario on-site. Brush up on reading blueprints, identifying common HVAC fault codes, and explaining your lockout-tagout procedure so you're ready to demonstrate, not just describe.
Negotiate shift differential and on-call terms
Facility roles often involve rotating shifts or after-hours emergency response. Before accepting an offer, clarify on-call frequency, response-time expectations, and whether differential pay applies, since these terms vary widely and affect your actual compensation.
Facility Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most facility technicians?
The companies hiring the most facility technicians right now include Walmart, Meta, and Oracle, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is particularly strong in healthcare systems, commercial property management firms, and large manufacturing operations.
How many facility technician jobs are remote?
About 1% of facility technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most roles in this field. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements include facilities coordination, work order management, and vendor oversight positions that don't require daily on-site technical work.
How do you become a facility technician?
You typically start by completing a high school diploma and then pursuing vocational training, a trade program, or an apprenticeship in HVAC, electrical, or general building maintenance. Earning a relevant certification such as EPA 608 or OSHA 10 strengthens your candidacy. Most entry-level roles expect hands-on experience with basic mechanical or electrical systems, which you can build through trade school labs, internships, or helper positions under a licensed technician.
Can you get hired as a facility technician with little experience?
Yes, employers regularly hire candidates with limited experience for entry-level or helper facility technician roles, especially when you hold a relevant trade certificate or have completed vocational coursework. Highlighting any hands-on exposure, even from school projects or personal maintenance work, helps. Targeting smaller properties or third-party facility management companies tends to be more accessible than large healthcare or industrial sites, which usually require demonstrated independent troubleshooting ability.
What does the facility technician interview process look like?
The process usually begins with a phone or video screen focused on your technical background and certifications, followed by an on-site interview where a facilities manager or maintenance supervisor asks scenario-based questions about troubleshooting HVAC, electrical, or plumbing issues. Many employers include a facility walk-through where they ask you to identify problems or describe how you would approach a repair. References from previous supervisors in a trade or maintenance environment are commonly requested before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to facility technician jobs?
You can find and apply to facility technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, certifications, and preferred facility type, then apply directly to each one that fits.
