Family Practice Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family practice nurse practitioner in Virginia?
You must earn a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice with a family nurse practitioner concentration, then pass either the AANP FNP-C or ANCC FNP-BC certification exam. After passing, you apply for licensure through the Virginia Board of Nursing, which grants nurse practitioner authority on your registered nurse license. Virginia also requires a separate application for prescriptive authority, including Schedule II through VI controlled substances.
Which companies hire family practice nurse practitioners in Virginia?
Companies currently hiring family practice nurse practitioners in Virginia include Spectrum Healthcare Resources, Carilion Clinic, and University of Virginia, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Virginia's mix of large integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and expanding urgent care networks means openings appear consistently across both high-density metro areas and underserved rural corridors.
Which Virginia cities have the most family practice nurse practitioner jobs?
Fairfax, Dumfries, and Blacksburg have the most family practice nurse practitioner openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's concentration of Inova and Kaiser Permanente facilities drives the highest volume, while Richmond's medical corridor anchored by VCU Health and Bon Secours and Hampton Roads' large Sentara network account for strong secondary markets.
Are there remote family practice nurse practitioner jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Family practice nurse practitioners deliver hands-on patient care, which limits fully remote opportunities significantly. About 0% of family practice nurse practitioner openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with most remote roles concentrated in telehealth triage, chronic condition management follow-ups, and behavioral health integration rather than full primary care practice.
How can I get hired as a family practice nurse practitioner in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a nurse practitioner residency or fellowship, and Virginia has several options: Inova Health System and VCU Health both run structured NP transition-to-practice programs designed for new graduates. Applying to federally qualified health centers across rural Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley is another strong route, as they actively recruit new graduates willing to serve underserved areas. Having your Virginia prescriptive authority application already submitted, a current DEA number, and a clinical rotation background in family medicine strengthens any application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to family practice nurse practitioner jobs in Virginia?
