Field Sales Engineer Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field sales engineer in South Dakota?
Most field sales engineer roles in South Dakota require a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or agricultural engineering, though degrees in applied sciences or related technical fields are also accepted by major employers. South Dakota does not require a state-issued license specifically for field sales engineers, so the path focuses on building technical product knowledge and sales experience. New graduates often start in applications engineering, technical support, or inside sales roles at companies like Daktronics or Raven Industries before moving into field-facing positions.
How much do field sales engineers make in South Dakota?
Field sales engineers in South Dakota earn a median of about $119,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,270 for the lowest 10% to over $162,470 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire field sales engineers in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring field sales engineers in South Dakota include Danaher Corporation, Ellison Technologies, and ABB, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's concentration of agricultural technology, industrial manufacturing, and commercial equipment firms means field sales engineer demand tends to be steady and tied closely to the state's core production industries.
Which South Dakota cities have the most field sales engineer jobs?
Sioux Falls, Brookings, and South Dakota account for the largest share of field sales engineer openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the most volume as the state's largest city and commercial hub, supported by a concentration of manufacturing and distribution employers, while Rapid City serves as the regional center for western South Dakota's industrial and energy-related accounts, and Aberdeen anchors agricultural technology activity in the northeast.
Are there remote field sales engineer jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of field sales engineer openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of a role that regularly requires in-person product demonstrations, customer site visits, and territory coverage. The portions of the work most likely to be done remotely are proposal writing, CRM management, and internal sales calls rather than customer-facing activities.
How can I get hired as a field sales engineer in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a technical support or applications engineering role at one of South Dakota's established manufacturers, where you build product knowledge before transitioning into field sales. Daktronics and Raven Industries both bring on new graduates for technical and customer-facing roles that often serve as a pipeline into sales engineer positions. Earning a Fundamentals of Engineering credential or completing a manufacturer's certified technical training program strengthens a candidate's profile when experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to field sales engineer jobs in South Dakota?
