Field Sales Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a field sales engineer in California?
The standard path into field sales engineering in California starts with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline, since California employers consistently use it as a baseline requirement. No state-issued license is required for the role itself. Most candidates build credibility through two to four years in a technical support, applications engineering, or inside sales role at a California manufacturer or technology company before moving into a field-facing position.
How much do field sales engineers make in California?
Field sales engineers in California earn a median of about $139,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $78,850 for the lowest 10% to over $213,370 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire field sales engineers in California?
Employers hiring field sales engineers in California right now include Siemens, Baya Systems, and Broadcom, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor fabs, biotech campuses, and enterprise technology headquarters means the field sales engineering market here draws from some of the largest and most technically demanding employers in the country.
Which California cities have the most field sales engineer jobs?
San Jose, Fremont, and San Diego account for the largest share of field sales engineer openings in California. The Bay Area dominates because of its dense cluster of semiconductor, cloud hardware, and life sciences companies, while San Diego's strength in wireless technology and biomedical devices drives significant demand there, and Los Angeles anchors aerospace and industrial automation hiring in the south.
Are there remote field sales engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Field sales engineering is inherently a territory-based, customer-facing role that requires on-site product demonstrations, equipment installations, and in-person relationship management, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 23% of field sales engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Where flexibility does exist, it tends to apply to pre-sales consulting and technical scoping calls rather than the hands-on field work.
How can I get hired as a field sales engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an applications engineer or technical sales support role at a California-based manufacturer or distributor, where you learn the product line and customer base before moving into a field quota-carrying position. Large California employers in semiconductor equipment and medical devices regularly bring on new graduates as sales development engineers or associate field application engineers. Earning a Certified Sales Professional designation or completing a manufacturer's sales certification gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to field sales engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to field sales engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including semiconductor equipment, life sciences, enterprise technology, and industrial automation. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
