Candidates who stand out typically combine CPA or CFA credentials with experience managing multi-entity consolidations or fund accounting, skills that align with the nonprofit and academic employers that dominate Philadelphia's market. Building relationships through the Philadelphia CFA Society or local CFO networking events also accelerates placement.

Are there remote finance director jobs in Philadelphia?
Yes, though finance director roles are less remote-friendly than individual contributor finance positions, given the leadership, board reporting, and cross-departmental coordination they require. About 87% of finance director openings tied to Philadelphia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote. Strategic and reporting-heavy functions tend to offer the most schedule flexibility among Philadelphia employers.
How can I get a finance director job in Philadelphia with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving through a senior manager or controller role at one of Philadelphia's large nonprofit health systems or universities, which regularly promote internal candidates into director-level finance positions. Roles such as assistant controller, finance manager, or grants accounting manager at institutions like Philadelphia-area hospital networks or colleges serve as natural stepping stones. Volunteering for board finance committee work with a Philadelphia nonprofit also builds the governance exposure that local hiring managers look for.
