Finance Director Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a finance director in Pennsylvania?
Most finance directors in Pennsylvania build toward the role through a combination of a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, a CPA credential issued through the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy, and progressive experience in financial analysis or accounting management. An MBA accelerates advancement at larger employers. The CPA is not a legal requirement for the title but is a near-universal expectation at Pennsylvania healthcare systems, universities, and major corporations.
Which companies hire finance directors in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring finance directors in Pennsylvania right now include BNY, Temple University Health System, and Allegheny Health Network, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of large hospital systems, insurance carriers, and publicly traded manufacturers means finance director roles appear across a wide range of industries beyond financial services alone.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most finance director jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Reading account for the most finance director openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia dominates because of its dense cluster of health systems, insurance companies, and Fortune 500 headquarters, while Pittsburgh's strength in healthcare and technology drives consistent demand there, and Harrisburg draws openings from state government agencies and regional financial institutions anchored in the capital region.
Are there remote finance director jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than many senior roles, because finance directors spend most of their time on analysis, reporting, and strategy rather than on-site operations. About 58% of finance director openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader adoption across the sector. FP&A and treasury-focused director roles tend to be the most remote-compatible, while positions overseeing accounts payable teams or physical plant budgets lean toward hybrid schedules.
How can I get hired as a finance director in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a senior financial analyst or accounting manager role that carries budget ownership and a small team. Large Pennsylvania employers like UPMC, Penn Medicine, and Aramark run structured finance development programs and internal promotion pipelines that move high-performing analysts into director-track positions. Earning a CPA through the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy and building FP&A or consolidation experience in a controller function gives candidates a meaningful edge when competing for first-time director openings.
