Functional Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a functional consultant in California?
Becoming a functional consultant in California typically starts with a bachelor's degree in business, information systems, or a related field, followed by hands-on experience in a functional area such as finance, supply chain, or human resources. California employers strongly favor candidates who hold platform-specific credentials from vendors like SAP, Oracle, or Salesforce, as these certifications signal practical readiness. Many consultants transition from roles as business analysts, systems coordinators, or operations specialists working at California technology firms or large enterprises before moving into consulting positions.
How much do functional consultants make in California?
Functional consultants in California earn a median of about $101,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,360 for the lowest 10% to over $174,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire functional consultants in California?
Employers hiring functional consultants in California right now include Numeric Technologies, Applied Medical, and Capgemini, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, healthcare systems, and financial services firms means demand is consistent across both boutique implementation shops and large enterprise consulting practices.
Which California cities have the most functional consultant jobs?
Los Angeles, Irvine, and Culver City have the most functional consultant openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its dense concentration of enterprise software companies and technology headquarters, while Los Angeles and San Diego generate demand through large healthcare networks, entertainment studios, and financial services firms that run ongoing ERP and CRM implementation programs.
Are there remote functional consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 25% of functional consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work, requirements gathering, documentation, and configuration review, can be done without being on-site. Roles that involve heavy end-user training or go-live support tend to require some in-person presence, but the configuration and analysis phases are widely accepted as remote work.
How can I get hired as a functional consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a business analyst or systems coordinator role at a California technology company or large enterprise before transitioning into consulting. Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce all offer entry-level partner program certifications that California employers recognize as a substitute for project experience. Associate consultant programs at firms like Deloitte and Accenture in San Francisco and Los Angeles hire candidates directly from California universities. Building a portfolio of a completed configuration project or a documented process improvement adds measurable credibility when experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to functional consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to functional consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated in real time. Search the listings to see roles across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other California markets, then apply directly to the ones that match your background and target industry.
