General Counsel Jobs in Austin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a general counsel job in Austin?
Target Austin's high-growth tech and fintech companies, which generate more general counsel openings locally than any other sector. Experience with SaaS contracting, data privacy, or regulatory compliance gives candidates a clear edge in this market. Networking through the Austin Bar Association and local startup communities, particularly around the Domain and downtown, is consistently the most effective path to landing interviews with Austin employers.
Which companies hire general counsels in Austin?
Companies currently hiring general counsels in Austin include Apple, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, and MEDS, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Austin's hiring mix is notably tech-heavy, but fast-growing healthcare systems, financial services firms, and real estate companies also maintain active in-house legal teams.
Are there remote general counsel jobs in Austin?
Yes, though general counsel roles are less remote-friendly than individual contributor legal positions because the role typically requires close coordination with leadership and board members. About 31% of general counsel openings tied to Austin are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote. Contract review, compliance oversight, and policy work are the functions Austin employers most readily allow off-site.
How can I get a general counsel job in Austin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Austin is joining a mid-size tech startup as a junior in-house attorney or legal operations specialist, where smaller legal teams give early-career candidates broader exposure faster. Austin accelerators and companies emerging from the University of Texas ecosystem frequently hire first-time in-house counsel. Building experience in commercial contracts or employment law at an Austin firm before transitioning in-house strengthens a candidate's profile significantly.
Which industries hire the most general counsels in Austin?
Austin general counsel roles concentrate in Electronics & Hardware, Technology & Software, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026.
