Tips for Your General Superintendent Job Search
Quantify your project scale on every resume
General superintendent roles demand proof of scope. List the total contract value, square footage, or crew size for each project you oversaw. Hiring managers use those numbers to decide whether your experience matches their pipeline.
Highlight your subcontractor management experience
Most openings require proven ability to coordinate multiple subcontractors simultaneously. Name the trades you managed directly, how many subs you ran at peak, and how you resolved schedule conflicts when they arose.
Target openings that match your sector experience
Commercial, heavy civil, and industrial general superintendent roles have different safety standards, equipment, and licensing expectations. Filter your search by sector so your application lands with hiring managers whose projects match what you've actually built.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists general superintendent openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a project portfolio before interviews
Bring a one-page project summary sheet to every interview. Include project type, contract value, your specific role, schedule outcome, and any safety milestones. Interviewers will ask you to walk through a difficult build, and having it documented makes your answers concrete.
Negotiate start date around project closeout
If you're wrapping a project, use that timeline as a negotiating anchor rather than a liability. Employers respect candidates who won't abandon an active site, and a firm closeout date gives you a credible reason to push your start back two to four weeks.
General Superintendent Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most general superintendents?
The companies hiring the most general superintendents right now include Clayco, Lithko Contracting, and Turner Construction Company, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Indiana, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large general contractors and civil infrastructure firms account for the majority of active postings.
How many general superintendent jobs are remote?
About 12% of general superintendent openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the on-site nature of most construction leadership roles. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid flexibility are preconstruction planning, project controls oversight, and corporate operations roles that sit above active job sites.
How do you become a general superintendent?
Most general superintendents start as laborers, carpenters, or tradespeople, then move into foreman and assistant superintendent roles as they gain project experience. Building proficiency in scheduling software, subcontractor coordination, and OSHA safety compliance is essential. Earning an OSHA 30-hour certification and completing a construction management program or apprenticeship accelerates the path into senior field leadership.
Can you get hired as a general superintendent with little experience in the role?
You can move into a general superintendent role from a strong project superintendent background if you can demonstrate that you've run full project cycles from groundbreaking through closeout. Smaller general contractors and specialty firms are more likely to promote from within or hire candidates who haven't yet held the title, particularly if your safety record and subcontractor management experience are well documented.
What does the general superintendent interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen focused on project type and scale, followed by an in-person or video interview where you walk through a specific challenging build in detail. A second interview often involves senior leadership or ownership and covers your approach to schedule recovery, subcontractor disputes, and site safety. Some firms ask for a project summary or references from past owners before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to general superintendent jobs?
You can find and apply to general superintendent jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your sector, project scale, and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
