Tips for Your Government Affairs Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to policy outcomes
Government affairs hiring managers want to see what you actually moved, not just what you monitored. Rewrite your bullet points to show legislation influenced, regulations shaped, or coalitions built, and name the specific policy areas you worked in.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists government affairs manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target employers by their regulatory exposure
Companies facing active rulemaking or pending legislation hire government affairs managers with urgency. Prioritize openings at firms in industries currently under congressional scrutiny or agency review, where your timing and subject-matter knowledge will carry the most weight.
Prepare a concrete legislative win for interviews
Most government affairs interviews include a behavioral question about influence. Walk in with one specific example: a bill you tracked from introduction to passage, an amendment you helped shape, or a regulatory comment you drafted that got a response.
Highlight your cross-functional communication skills
Government affairs managers translate policy risk for executives and legal teams who are not policy experts. On your resume and in interviews, show how you briefed senior leaders, wrote executive summaries of regulatory developments, or aligned internal stakeholders on a public affairs strategy.
Negotiate your title and scope, not just pay
In government affairs, your access and seniority determine what meetings you get into. Before accepting an offer, ask which executives you will brief directly, whether you will represent the company externally, and how the role is positioned relative to lobbyists or outside counsel.
Government Affairs Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most government affairs managers?
The companies hiring the most government affairs managers right now include Goodwill Industries, Accuweather Sales And Service, and American Electric Power, with the largest share of openings in California, Illinois, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong in industries with active federal or state regulatory dockets, including healthcare, energy, and financial services.
How many government affairs manager jobs are remote?
About 14% of government affairs manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though many roles require proximity to Washington D.C. or a state capital. Positions focused on internal policy monitoring and stakeholder communications tend to offer more flexibility than roles that require in-person lobbying or regular Hill meetings.
How do you become a government affairs manager?
Most government affairs managers start in legislative offices, regulatory agencies, trade associations, or policy-focused roles at a company or nonprofit. From there, the typical path involves building subject-matter depth in a specific policy area, developing relationships on Capitol Hill or with relevant agencies, and moving into an in-house government affairs role where you manage advocacy strategy rather than just tracking legislation.
Can you get hired as a government affairs manager without direct lobbying experience?
Yes, especially if your background includes time on a congressional or agency staff, work at a trade association, or a policy-focused role in a regulated industry. Employers care most about whether you understand how policy gets made and whether you have relationships with the people making it. A strong policy portfolio and demonstrated ability to influence outcomes can substitute for a formal lobbying title.
What does the government affairs manager interview process look like?
Most government affairs interviews involve an initial screening with HR or a talent team, followed by substantive conversations with the head of government affairs or a senior executive. You should expect policy-specific questions about a regulatory issue relevant to their industry, a behavioral question about a time you influenced a policy outcome, and often a writing exercise such as a one-page policy brief or executive summary.
Where can I find and apply to government affairs manager jobs?
You can find and apply to government affairs manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your background and policy focus, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
