Align your resume to PERM job requirements
PERM filings lock in the exact minimum requirements your employer advertises. Make sure your degree field and years of experience match the posted role precisely, because discrepancies between your resume and the certified job description can stall the I-140 review.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Application Support Engineer roles appear frequently in OFLC disclosure data for managed service providers, SaaS companies, and healthcare IT firms. Filtering PERM records by SOC code 15-1232 helps you identify employers who have already navigated the process for this occupation.
Verify your wage level before accepting an offer
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage certified on the LCA. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for your metro area before negotiating, so you know whether the offer meets DOL minimums for green card filing.
Understand how your degree field affects EB-2 eligibility
EB-2 requires an advanced degree or its equivalent. For Application Support Engineer roles, a bachelor's in computer science plus five years of progressive experience can substitute. USCIS evaluates whether the degree and experience together demonstrate the advanced-degree professional standard.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers by role
Search Migrate Mate specifically for Application Support Engineer positions with green card sponsorship history. The platform surfaces employers who have filed PERM or I-140 petitions for this occupation, saving you from applying to companies that have never sponsored permanent residency.
Negotiate the PERM start date during offer discussions
PERM processing through DOL currently runs six months or longer before the I-140 can even be filed. Ask your employer to initiate the prevailing wage determination immediately after you accept the offer, not months later, so your priority date is established as early as possible.
Green Card Application Support Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Application Support Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Both categories are available depending on the specific job requirements your employer defines. EB-3 covers the role as a skilled worker or professional with a bachelor's degree. EB-2 applies when the position requires an advanced degree or when you can demonstrate equivalent credentials through a combination of education and progressive work experience that USCIS recognizes as meeting that standard.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary status with annual caps, a lottery, and fixed validity periods. PERM-based green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most nationalities outside India and China. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status typically take two to four years for workers born in low-backlog countries.
What does the PERM labor certification process require from the employer?
Your employer must conduct a DOL-mandated recruitment campaign to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers are available for the Application Support Engineer position at the certified wage. This includes placing job ads in specific outlets over a set period. DOL then reviews the recruitment results before certifying the application, which allows the employer to file your I-140 petition with USCIS.
How do I find Application Support Engineer jobs where the employer will sponsor a green card?
Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Application Support Engineer positions with verified green card sponsorship history. Because PERM filings are public record through OFLC disclosure data, the platform can show you which employers have actually filed for this occupation rather than those who simply say they are open to sponsorship in a job description.
Can I switch employers after my PERM is filed but before my green card is approved?
Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date is established, the AC21 portability rule allows you to change to a same or similar role without losing your place in the queue, provided your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. Changing employers before I-140 approval generally means restarting the PERM process from the beginning with the new company.
