Map your degree to PERM requirements
PERM job descriptions must specify a minimum education requirement tied to the role. If your degree is in a related field like computer engineering or mathematics, document how your coursework covers information security to preempt DOL audit questions.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Search the DOL's OFLC Wage Search data to identify companies that have filed PERM applications for IT Security Engineer or related cybersecurity titles. Firms with recent filings have already built the internal HR and legal infrastructure to sponsor you.
Find sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter IT Security Engineer roles by employers with green card sponsorship history. You'll see which companies have filed for cybersecurity roles specifically, saving weeks of manual OFLC disclosure data research.
Distinguish EB-2 from EB-3 before your offer
If your role requires only a bachelor's degree, most employers will sponsor under EB-3. Push for EB-2 classification early if you hold a master's degree or can document progressive cybersecurity experience, since EB-2 priority dates are generally closer to current for most countries.
Negotiate PERM job duties before signing
The PERM application must describe your actual job duties. Review the draft labor certification carefully to confirm the listed tasks match your O*NET occupation profile for IT Security Engineers, since mismatches can trigger DOL audits that add six months or more to your timeline.
Prepare for the prevailing wage determination step
Your employer must obtain a prevailing wage determination from OFLC before filing PERM. Check the OFLC Wage Search yourself using your exact job title, work location, and Level II or III wage to verify the offered salary qualifies, since an underpaid offer restarts the process.
Green Card IT Security Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Security Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most IT Security Engineer positions qualify under EB-3 when the job requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, or a related field. If the role requires a master's degree or the candidate holds one and can document specialized expertise, EB-2 classification is available. Your employer's immigration attorney will draft the PERM job description to match the correct category.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary status with a three-year initial period, subject to the annual lottery, and does not lead directly to permanent residency. PERM green card sponsorship bypasses the lottery entirely, has no annual cap at the petition stage, and results in lawful permanent residency. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification alone typically takes six to eighteen months before USCIS even receives the I-140 petition.
Where can I find IT Security Engineer jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search IT Security Engineer roles filtered by employers with documented green card and PERM sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to companies that don't sponsor. This significantly narrows your search to employers who have already cleared the legal and HR hurdles required for employment-based permanent residency.
Can my employer sponsor me for a green card while I'm on an H-1B for this role?
Yes. Many IT Security Engineers begin the PERM process while working on H-1B status. Filing the I-140 petition early is strategically important because it locks in your priority date. Under AC21 portability rules, once your I-140 has been approved for 180 days and an immigrant visa number is available, you can also change employers without losing your place in the green card queue.
What documentation do I need to support an IT Security Engineer PERM application?
You'll need transcripts confirming your degree in a qualifying field, an employment verification letter documenting your cybersecurity experience, and any professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CEH that the job description lists as requirements. Your employer's attorney will use the O*NET occupation profile for IT Security Engineers to align the PERM job duties with DOL expectations and reduce audit risk.
