Verify your BOC certification transfers
PERM petitions for Athletic Trainers require state licensure in the hiring state. Confirm your Board of Certification credentials are recognized before your employer files, since missing a state license can stall the entire labor certification.
Target employers with existing PERM history
University athletic departments, hospital-based sports medicine programs, and professional sports organizations have the legal infrastructure to run a PERM recruitment process. Search OFLC disclosure data to identify which employer types have filed for Athletic Trainer roles previously.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring Athletic Trainer jobs
Filter by green card sponsorship history to surface employers who have already navigated PERM for this occupation. Migrate Mate surfaces that data by role, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never sponsored.
Understand the EB-3 prevailing wage requirement
Your employer must pay at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role and worksite location. Check the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer to confirm the wage level your employer will need to certify.
Request the offer letter before PERM recruitment starts
PERM requires your employer to post the job publicly at the certified wage before filing. Getting a written offer that confirms your title, duties, and wage locks in your position as the intended beneficiary throughout the recruitment period.
Account for PERM's multi-year timeline in your planning
PERM labor certification currently takes over a year at DOL, and the full green card process adds more time before you can adjust status. Structure any temporary work authorization, such as H-1B visa or O-1 visa, to bridge that window without a gap.
Green Card Athletic Trainer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Athletic Trainer roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Athletic Trainer positions are filed under EB-3, which covers skilled workers requiring a bachelor's degree and professional licensure. EB-2 sponsorship is available if the role requires an advanced degree or your employer can demonstrate the position demands graduate-level specialized knowledge. Your employer's PERM petition specifies which category applies based on the job requirements they define.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Athletic Trainers?
H-1B is a temporary visa requiring annual cap registration and a lottery, and it must be renewed while you remain employed. EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency with no renewal cycle. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification alone currently takes over a year at DOL, making it a longer but permanent solution compared to H-1B's faster but temporary authorization.
Which employers typically sponsor Athletic Trainers for a green card?
University athletic departments, hospital-affiliated sports medicine clinics, professional sports franchises, and large multi-site rehabilitation networks are the most common sponsors. These organizations have HR and legal infrastructure to manage the PERM recruitment process. Smaller outpatient clinics can sponsor but may require more time to set up the required DOL compliance steps for the first time.
Where can I find Athletic Trainer jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Athletic Trainer roles by employers with documented green card sponsorship history, so you're targeting positions where PERM is already a known process for the hiring team. This avoids the common situation of progressing through interviews only to learn the employer has never sponsored and isn't willing to start.
What credentials does DOL expect to see in a PERM filing for an Athletic Trainer?
USCIS and DOL both look at whether the minimum requirements in the job description match the actual duties. For Athletic Trainers, standard requirements include a bachelor's degree in athletic training or kinesiology and current BOC certification. Your employer must list the state licensure requirement if the hiring state mandates it, and the prevailing wage must reflect those requirements as confirmed through the OFLC Wage Search.
