Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Clinical Registered Nurse
Get your CGFNS credential evaluation early
PERM-sponsoring hospitals require a CGFNS or equivalent credential evaluation before initiating your labor certification. Start this process before you have a job offer, since evaluations can take several months and delays will stall the employer's filing timeline.
Target hospitals with existing PERM filing history
Health systems that have sponsored foreign nurses before already have immigration counsel, established PERM recruitment documentation, and internal HR processes. Asking a recruiter whether the facility has sponsored EB-3 candidates before filters out employers who are willing in theory but unprepared in practice.
Confirm your nursing license covers the sponsoring state
PERM requires the employer to attest you meet the minimum requirements at the time of filing. If your RN license is in a Compact state but the job is in a non-Compact state, you'll need to obtain that state's license before the labor certification can proceed.
Understand how prevailing wage affects your offer
PERM requires your offered wage to meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for Registered Nurses in your target city before negotiating an offer, so you know what the minimum compliant salary must be.
Search for green card sponsors using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters jobs by employers with active green card sponsorship history for nursing roles. Use it to identify hospitals and health systems already familiar with the EB-3 PERM process, which shortens your path from offer to approved I-140 petition.
Clarify who manages the PERM process before signing
Some employers use in-house immigration teams; others rely on outside counsel. Before accepting an offer, confirm the hospital has a dedicated person overseeing PERM filings and ask for a general timeline. Disorganized employer-side preparation is a leading reason EB-3 cases stall after the offer stage.
Green Card Clinical Registered Nurse: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Registered Nurse qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Clinical RN roles qualify under EB-3, which covers skilled workers in positions requiring at least two years of training or experience. EB-2 is available if the role requires a master's degree or higher, or if you qualify for a National Interest Waiver, though NIW self-petitions for nursing are rare. The majority of hospital-sponsored RNs proceed through EB-3 via PERM labor certification.
How does EB-3 green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for registered nurses?
H-1B visa requires an employer petition each year and is subject to an annual cap and lottery, which creates uncertainty. EB-3 sponsorship through PERM is a permanent residency pathway with no lottery and no annual cap at the preference level for most countries. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM plus I-140 plus adjustment of status typically takes two to four years for nurses from non-backlogged countries, longer for nationals of India or China.
What credentials must be in order before an employer can start PERM for an RN role?
PERM requires that you meet the job's minimum requirements at the time of filing. For Clinical RNs that means an active RN license in the sponsoring state, a CGFNS credential evaluation or equivalent confirming your foreign nursing degree is comparable to a U.S. degree, and passing NCLEX. Employers who attempt PERM before these are complete risk a denial or audit from DOL.
Where can I find hospitals that actively sponsor green cards for nurses?
Migrate Mate lets you search for Clinical RN jobs filtered by employers with verified green card sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to facilities that have no PERM experience. PERM-experienced employers already have immigration counsel engaged, established recruitment documentation, and a process for moving candidates from offer to I-140 without unnecessary delays.
Can I switch employers after my PERM is approved but before I have a green card?
Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date is current, you can port to a same or similar occupation under AC21 portability rules if your adjustment of status application has been pending for 180 days or more. Nursing roles generally port cleanly to other RN positions. Changing employers before I-140 approval restarts the PERM process entirely, so timing the move matters significantly.
