Verify your credential equivalency before applying
Your physical therapy degree from outside the U.S. must be evaluated for equivalency before PERM proceeds. Get a credential evaluation from a USCIS-recognized agency and confirm your foreign PT license will satisfy state licensure requirements in your target market.
Target employers with established PT departments
Hospitals with dedicated sports medicine or orthopedic rehabilitation units are more likely to have internal HR teams familiar with PERM. Collegiate athletic programs and multi-clinic PT groups also sponsor regularly because long-term staff retention justifies the filing cost.
Search green card sponsoring PT jobs on Migrate Mate
Filter by EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship to surface employers who have already filed PERM for physical therapist roles. Migrate Mate surfaces DOL labor certification data so you can approach employers with documented sponsorship history rather than cold-pitching unfamiliar organizations.
Check the OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations
Your offer must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and geographic area or PERM will be denied. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for physical therapists in your city before you receive a written offer.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 track with your employer
EB-2 requires a master's degree or a bachelor's plus five years of progressive experience in a specialty area like sports rehabilitation. If your credentials fit EB-2, it can reduce your priority date wait time for certain nationalities compared to EB-3.
Understand the PERM recruitment window and your role in it
Your employer must run DOL-mandated job advertisements and document that no minimally qualified U.S. workers applied before filing the PERM application. This recruitment period typically takes 60 to 90 days, so start the conversation with HR well before your current status deadline.
Green Card Sports Physical Therapist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Sports Physical Therapist roles qualify for both EB-2 and EB-3 green card categories?
Yes. EB-3 applies to most PT roles requiring a bachelor's degree, which covers the standard Doctor of Physical Therapy or a qualifying bachelor's pathway. EB-2 applies if your role requires an advanced degree or if you have a bachelor's plus five or more years of progressive specialized experience in areas like sports rehabilitation or orthopedic manual therapy. Your employer's attorney will determine the stronger category based on your credentials and the actual job requirements.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for physical therapists?
H-1B visa is a temporary work status with a two-year cap-subject lottery for most applicants, while an employment-based green card leads to permanent residency with no renewal cycle. PERM requires your employer to prove no qualified U.S. workers are available for the specific role, a step H-1B does not require. EB-3 green cards have no annual numerical cap on petitions, though visa number availability by country of birth affects when you can receive your green card after approval.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor Sports Physical Therapists for green cards?
Hospital systems with orthopedic or sports medicine departments, outpatient rehabilitation clinic groups, collegiate and professional sports organizations, and multi-location PT practices are the most consistent PERM filers for this role. Larger organizations tend to have in-house immigration support, which simplifies the filing process. Use Migrate Mate to identify which specific employers have active or historical PERM filings for physical therapist positions in your target city.
How long does the PERM and EB-3 green card process take for a physical therapist?
The PERM labor certification stage currently takes roughly six to eighteen months at the DOL, depending on whether the application is selected for audit. After PERM approval, your employer files the I-140 petition with USCIS, which can take several months under standard processing. Adjustment of status or consular processing adds additional time. For nationals of most countries, the overall timeline from job offer to green card approval is commonly two to four years.
Can I negotiate my salary and still meet PERM requirements as a physical therapist?
Your offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and the worksite location, as determined by the OFLC Wage Search tool, or PERM will be denied. You can negotiate any amount above that floor. Accepting below the prevailing wage is not permitted under PERM rules regardless of mutual agreement, so confirm the wage determination with your employer before signing an offer letter.
