Green Card Corporate Legal Counsel Jobs
Corporate Legal Counsel roles at U.S. companies qualify for employment-based green card sponsorship under EB-2 or EB-3, with employers filing PERM labor certification through DOL before submitting the I-140 immigrant petition to USCIS. Most in-house counsel positions require a J.D. and active bar admission, which supports the advanced-degree EB-2 classification.

Document your bar admissions strategically
Your PERM application ties the job requirements to your credentials. Gather official certificates of good standing from every jurisdiction where you're admitted, because DOL auditors request these to verify that stated requirements match your actual qualifications.
Target companies with dedicated legal departments
In-house legal teams at publicly traded companies, regulated financial institutions, and large healthcare systems routinely sponsor green cards for corporate counsel roles. These employers already have immigration counsel on retainer and understand the PERM timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Search Corporate Legal Counsel roles on Migrate Mate to identify employers with active green card filing history for this job title, so you're applying where sponsorship is an established practice rather than a negotiation.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 classification early
If the posted role requires a J.D. as a minimum, EB-2 advanced-degree classification is standard. If the employer drafts the PERM job description to require only a bachelor's degree plus experience, it defaults to EB-3, which affects your priority date and wait time.
Negotiate PERM filing timing before your start date
USCIS requires you to be in a valid nonimmigrant status throughout adjustment of status. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel whether they'll file PERM within the first year, since early filing preserves your priority date against potential backlog shifts.
Verify the prevailing wage before the offer stage
DOL's PERM process requires your offered salary to meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Check the OFLC Wage Search for the Level II or Level III wage for your specific metro area before finalizing your compensation negotiation.
Green Card Corporate Legal Counsel: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Corporate Legal Counsel qualify for EB-2 green card sponsorship?
Yes. Corporate Legal Counsel roles typically require a J.D., which is a U.S. professional degree that satisfies the EB-2 advanced-degree requirement. Your employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL to document that no qualified U.S. worker is available, then submits an I-140 petition to USCIS under the EB-2 classification. Bar admission in the relevant jurisdiction is usually a stated requirement and must appear in the PERM job description.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual lottery, while PERM-based green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no cap at the EB-2 or EB-3 petition level for most nationalities. The PERM process is longer, often 18 to 36 months from labor certification through adjustment of status, but it eliminates lottery risk and eventual status uncertainty. Many employers initiate green card filing while you're already working on an H-1B.
Which employers regularly sponsor green cards for in-house legal counsel?
Large financial institutions, Fortune 500 companies, healthcare systems, and technology firms with dedicated legal departments are the most consistent sponsors. These organizations have established relationships with immigration law firms and include green card sponsorship in standard employment packages for legal professionals. Regulated industries such as banking, pharmaceuticals, and energy tend to sponsor at higher rates because their legal teams handle complex compliance work requiring specialized expertise.
How can I find Corporate Legal Counsel jobs with green card sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Corporate Legal Counsel roles filtered by employers with documented green card filing activity. This lets you focus your applications on companies that have already sponsored similar positions rather than spending time negotiating sponsorship from scratch. Targeting employers with established immigration processes is the most efficient path to a PERM-based sponsorship offer.
Can my employer start the PERM process before I have an H-1B or other status?
PERM filing has no status requirement, so your employer can begin labor certification at any point. You do need to be in valid nonimmigrant status when you file Form I-485 for adjustment of status, which is the final U.S.-based step. If you're outside the U.S. when your I-140 is approved, you can complete the process through consular processing instead, which has no status requirement.
