Green Card Engineering Jobs
Engineering roles in software, civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification. Employers file on your behalf, documenting that no qualified U.S. worker is available. Sponsorship leads to permanent residency, not a temporary visa status.

Match your degree to the SOC code
PERM filings list a specific Standard Occupational Classification code tied to your role. If your foreign engineering degree doesn't align with that SOC code, USCIS may flag the I-140. Request a credential evaluation that maps your coursework to U.S. equivalents before applications begin.
Filter employers by active PERM filings
Target companies that have certified PERM applications for engineering roles in the past two years. DOL disclosure data shows which employers regularly sponsor and which treat green card cases as exceptions. Use Migrate Mate to search sponsoring employers by engineering discipline and location.
Negotiate green card timing before accepting an offer
Ask whether the employer starts PERM during your first year or waits until H-1B visa renewal. Delays past year three push your priority date further out, especially for EB-3. Get the sponsorship timeline in writing as part of your offer discussion.
Understand the prevailing wage before your PERM is filed
DOL sets the prevailing wage for your specific engineering title and work location using the OFLC Wage Search. If your offered salary falls below that wage level, your PERM will be denied. Review the wage determination with your employer before the application is submitted.
Verify the employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Engineering employers sponsoring foreign nationals must be enrolled in E-Verify before hiring. Confirming enrollment early tells you whether the company has the compliance infrastructure to run a PERM case and eventually file your adjustment of status without administrative delays.
Use O*NET to strengthen your specialty occupation case
For EB-2 engineering roles, the O*NET occupation profile documents that a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering discipline is the standard requirement. Reference the relevant O*NET job zone and education data when your employer's immigration counsel builds the PERM job description.
Green Card Engineering: Frequently Asked Questions
Which engineering roles qualify for EB-2 versus EB-3 green card sponsorship?
EB-2 covers engineering positions requiring a master's degree or higher, or a bachelor's degree with at least five years of progressive experience that DOL accepts as equivalent. EB-3 covers professional engineering roles that require a bachelor's degree as a standard requirement. Most mid-level software, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering positions qualify under EB-3, while senior research or principal engineering roles with advanced degree requirements typically qualify under EB-2.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for engineering professionals?
H-1B is a temporary status capped at 85,000 new slots per year and subject to annual lottery selection. EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual cap on petitions filed, though visa number availability varies by country of birth. PERM leads to permanent residency rather than a renewable but conditional work authorization, and there's no lottery risk once your employer completes the labor certification process.
How long does the PERM and green card process take for an engineering role?
PERM labor certification currently runs 18 to 24 months at DOL, followed by I-140 petition processing at USCIS, which takes six to eight months under standard processing. After I-140 approval, your wait for an available visa number depends on your country of birth and whether the EB-2 or EB-3 category is backlogged. Applicants born in countries without per-country backlogs can often complete adjustment of status within three to four years of starting the process.
Can I search specifically for engineering employers who sponsor green cards?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you filter engineering job listings by employers with active PERM and I-140 sponsorship history, so you're applying to companies that have already run the process rather than those who may consider it. This is more reliable than asking during a cold application whether a company sponsors, since many engineering employers only sponsor for specific roles or seniority levels.
What happens to my green card case if I change engineering jobs mid-process?
If you change employers before your I-140 is approved, your PERM case is abandoned and your new employer must start the process from the beginning. After I-140 approval and once your priority date is within 180 days of becoming current, federal law allows you to port your priority date to a new employer in a same or similar engineering role without restarting the full PERM process.
