Green Card Automation Engineer Jobs
Automation Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which lets employers permanently sponsor foreign professionals. Your employer files with DOL, then USCIS, converting a job offer into lawful permanent residency. Roles involving PLC programming, robotics, or industrial control systems consistently attract sponsoring employers.

Job Description
We’re hiring a Staff Equipment Engineer within our growing Operations Engineering team. In this role, you will serve as a primary technical lead for the automated equipment required to ramp production of our iron air battery. You will own the processes and improvements of complex robotic cells and automated hardware, driving technical decisions that eliminate manufacturing bottlenecks and ensure long-term equipment reliability. By continuously improving standards for automated equipment and precision control, you will ensure our production environment delivers a high volume of top quality products. Your leadership will be the cornerstone in transforming advanced battery technology into a world-class, automated manufacturing reality that secures global energy reliability.
What You’ll Do
- Own and improve semi-manual and automated manufacturing equipment for modular products.
- Define and implement OEE and equipment performance metrics to identify loss drivers and prioritize improvement work.
- Collaborate with product design and process development engineering to provide DFM/DFA feedback, ensuring optimization for fully-automated, high-speed manufacturing.
- Drive cross-functional alignment with controls and process teams to improve solutions such as torque tools, lift devices, vision checks, interlocks, and other equipment.
- Lead root-cause analysis of assembly and quality issues, turning findings into durable equipment improvements that ensure safe and repeatable production.
- Support production ramp and sustaining operations, stabilizing builds and reducing variation across shifts.
- Mentor and guide multidisciplinary engineering teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence in equipment handling and pragmatic problem-solving.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Controls, or a related discipline and 7+ years of relevant experience.
- Deep technical understanding of semi-manual and automated equipment for complex systems.
- Demonstrated expertise with Fanuc Robotics and other automation equipment.
- Extensive experience developing assembly methods, tooling, fixtures, and work instructions in an automated production environment.
- Proven track record of providing DFM/DFA feedback to product design and process development teams, influencing part design, interfaces, tolerances, and fastening strategies to improve manufacturability.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and address process, design, and human-factor-driven issues.
- Effective communicator across production, quality, and design teams.
Where you'll work:
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV—an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as an Automation Engineer
Match your credentials to EB-2 requirements
EB-2 requires an advanced degree or its equivalent in electrical engineering, controls engineering, or a closely related field. If your bachelor's plus progressive experience adds up to a master's equivalent, document it clearly before approaching employers.
Target employers with active PERM histories
Search the OFLC Wage Search for certified PERM applications filed under SOC code 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers) or 17-3024 (Electro-Mechanical Technicians). Manufacturers, aerospace firms, and automotive suppliers file consistently in this category.
Find green card sponsoring roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Automation Engineer openings by employers with documented green card sponsorship history. This surfaces roles where the hiring process already accounts for PERM timelines, so you're not negotiating sponsorship from scratch.
Understand how prevailing wage affects your offer
Your employer must pay the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location before PERM is filed. Cross-check your offer against the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the wage level matches the actual duties in your job description.
Request a concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing
If a visa number is immediately available for your country and preference category, ask your employer to file the I-140 petition and your I-485 adjustment of status simultaneously. USCIS allows this, and it significantly compresses the wait time to a green card decision.
Document technical scope to survive PERM audits
DOL audits Automation Engineer PERM cases more frequently when job duties overlap with multiple SOC codes. Ensure your employer's job description specifies the control systems, automation platforms, or programming languages required, rather than listing generic engineering tasks.
Green Card Automation Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automation Engineer role qualify for both EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship?
Yes. EB-2 applies if the role requires an advanced degree or the employer can demonstrate an advanced degree is standard for the position. EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field. Many Automation Engineer positions qualify under either category, and the employer chooses based on the role's documented requirements and your credentials.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Automation Engineers?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status with a three-year initial period and an annual lottery cap. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 leads to permanent residency with no renewal requirement. There's no annual lottery for EB-3 petitions, so your employer can file anytime. The tradeoff is timeline: the full PERM-to-green-card process typically takes longer than an H-1B approval, but the result is permanent.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for Automation Engineer roles?
Your employer must conduct a supervised recruitment campaign, advertise the Automation Engineer position to U.S. workers at the prevailing wage, and certify to DOL that no qualified U.S. applicants were rejected. DOL reviews the application and, if approved, certifies the PERM. Your employer then files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. Only after I-140 approval can you proceed to adjustment of status or consular processing.
How can I find Automation Engineer jobs that already offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Automation Engineer roles at employers with verified green card sponsorship history. Filtering by sponsorship history up front means you avoid roles where sponsorship is theoretically possible but practically unlikely, saving significant time during your job search.
Can I switch employers while my green card application is pending?
Yes, under AC21 portability, you can change employers after your I-140 is approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For Automation Engineers, a move to a comparable controls or robotics role at a new employer generally qualifies, but confirm the SOC code alignment with your new employer before accepting an offer.
