Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as an Epidemiologist
Align your credentials to EB-2 requirements
EB-2 requires a master's degree or higher in epidemiology, public health, or a closely related field. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation before applying so employers can confirm your qualifications meet USCIS standards.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Federal agencies like the CDC, NIH, and state health departments routinely sponsor epidemiologists through PERM. Search Migrate Mate to filter Epidemiologist roles by employers with documented green card sponsorship activity, saving weeks of manual research.
Understand how specialty occupation affects your PERM job description
PERM requires the employer to define a minimum requirement for the role. If the posted job description says a bachelor's degree is acceptable, your EB-2 petition may be weakened. Confirm the employer lists an advanced degree as the actual minimum before you accept an offer.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your specific job title, location, and experience level. Check OFLC Wage Search yourself so you know the floor before salary discussions begin and can flag any discrepancy early.
Factor in PERM recruitment timing when evaluating offers
PERM requires the employer to complete a 30-to-60-day recruitment process and obtain DOL certification before filing the I-140. Ask hiring managers whether they have completed PERM before or whether they are starting from scratch, since this affects your green card timeline by six months or more.
Verify your SOC code matches your actual duties
DOL assigns prevailing wages based on the Standard Occupational Classification code the employer selects. Epidemiologist roles can be filed under different SOC codes depending on your specialty, and a mismatched code can result in an incorrect wage determination or a PERM audit.
Green Card Epidemiologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Epidemiologist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Epidemiologist positions qualify for EB-2 because the role typically requires a master's degree or higher in epidemiology, public health, or a related discipline. Positions requiring only a bachelor's degree may be filed under EB-3 instead. The employer's minimum educational requirement in the PERM job description determines which category applies, so confirming that detail before accepting an offer is essential.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Epidemiologists?
The H-1B visa is a temporary work visa capped at 85,000 per year and subject to a lottery, while PERM sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries. The PERM process requires DOL labor market testing and typically takes one to three years from start to green card approval, but the outcome is lawful permanent residency rather than a renewable temporary status.
Which types of employers sponsor Epidemiologists for green cards?
Federal agencies such as the CDC and NIH, state and county health departments, academic medical centers, and research universities are the most consistent sponsors. Some large pharmaceutical companies and consulting firms that contract with government health agencies also file PERM for Epidemiologist roles. Use Migrate Mate to identify which employers have active sponsorship history for this specific job title.
Can an Epidemiologist self-petition without an employer sponsor?
Self-petition is possible under EB-2 through the National Interest Waiver, which waives the PERM requirement for candidates who can demonstrate their work benefits the United States. Epidemiologists working in public health research, disease surveillance, or pandemic preparedness have successfully argued NIW eligibility, but this route requires a strong record of publications, citations, or policy impact and is not guaranteed.
What should I look for in an Epidemiologist job posting to confirm green card sponsorship?
Look for explicit language such as 'will sponsor work authorization' or 'open to PERM sponsorship' in the posting. Postings that say 'must be authorized to work without sponsorship' exclude you entirely. O*NET confirms the specialty occupation classification for Epidemiologist roles, which supports your case when discussing eligibility with an employer. Migrate Mate filters Epidemiologist listings by verified sponsorship history so you only see roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
