Get your BACB certification documented early
PERM audits frequently target RBT roles because employers must prove your credentials meet the job requirements. Have your BACB certification letter, supervised hours log, and any foreign equivalency documentation ready before your employer files.
Target employers billing through Medicaid or insurance
ABA clinics and behavioral health organizations with Medicaid contracts tend to have dedicated HR and compliance infrastructure, making them far more likely to sponsor PERM than small private-pay practices that lack in-house immigration support.
Search for green card sponsoring RBT jobs on Migrate Mate
Filter specifically for employers with active EB-3 PERM filing history for behavior technician roles. Migrate Mate surfaces that DOL data directly, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never run a green card sponsorship before.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility with your employer
Most RBT positions fall under EB-3 skilled worker because the role typically requires a high school diploma plus BACB certification. If your employer writes the job description to require a bachelor's degree, EB-2 becomes available, which can shorten wait times for some nationalities.
Ask about the prevailing wage determination before accepting an offer
Your employer must pay the DOL-certified prevailing wage throughout the PERM process. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for RBT roles in your work location before negotiations, so you can confirm the offer won't fall below what PERM requires.
Understand that PERM recruitment advertising affects your timeline
DOL requires employers to complete a mandatory recruitment period before filing PERM, typically 30 to 60 days of documented job posting. Your green card clock doesn't start until PERM is filed, so ask your employer when they plan to begin the recruitment phase.
Green Card Registered Behavior Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Do RBT jobs actually qualify for EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes. Registered Behavior Technician roles qualify under the EB-3 skilled worker category when the position requires training and a specific credential, such as BACB certification. Employers file a PERM labor certification with DOL, then an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. There's no annual lottery like the H-1B visa, so your eligibility isn't subject to random selection.
How does the green card process compare to the H-1B for RBT roles?
The H-1B requires a bachelor's degree in a specialty field and subjects you to an annual lottery, which many RBT positions don't satisfy structurally. The EB-3 PERM route has no lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM and I-140 together can take one to two years before you reach the visa queue, but the outcome is a green card, not a visa that expires.
Which types of employers sponsor RBTs for green cards?
ABA therapy clinics, school districts, residential treatment facilities, and large behavioral health organizations are the most common sponsors. Employers with Medicaid billing infrastructure and dedicated HR departments are better positioned to manage the PERM process. Smaller private-pay practices rarely sponsor because they lack the compliance resources DOL requires during the recruitment and audit phase.
How can I find RBT jobs where the employer is already willing to sponsor a green card?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for employers with documented PERM filing history for behavior technician and related roles. That filters out employers who express vague interest in sponsorship but have never actually run the process, which is one of the most common frustrations for foreign RBTs entering the U.S. job market.
Does my BACB certification from outside the U.S. count toward PERM eligibility?
The BACB issues its certifications through a global credentialing process, so your RBT certificate is recognized regardless of where you obtained it. What matters for PERM is that your employer's job description lists BACB certification as a requirement and that your credential is current and verifiable on the BACB registry. Some employers also request foreign education equivalency documentation if your training occurred outside the U.S.
