Green Card Mental Health Jobs
Mental health jobs in clinical counseling, psychiatry, and social work are actively sponsored for green cards by hospitals, community health centers, and behavioral health networks. Employers use PERM labor certification to file EB-2 or EB-3 petitions, converting a job offer into permanent U.S. residency sponsorship for qualified foreign professionals.

Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
State licensure for counselors, social workers, and psychologists is not automatically portable. Confirm your home-country credentials meet the target state's licensure board requirements before applying, since PERM requires the position's minimum qualifications to be legitimate and consistently enforced.
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
Hospitals and community mental health centers enrolled in E-Verify signal established immigration compliance infrastructure. These employers are far more likely to have HR teams familiar with PERM filings than smaller private practices encountering sponsorship for the first time.
Search green-card-sponsoring mental health employers on Migrate Mate
Filter directly for mental health roles at employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Migrate Mate surfaces this data so you can prioritize outreach to organizations that have navigated PERM before, not ones learning the process on your timeline.
Document supervised clinical hours before your PERM starts
Many mental health roles require post-degree supervised hours for licensure. Gather certified records of those hours early. If your employer lists licensure as a job requirement, PERM's audit defense depends on proving you met that standard at the time of the job offer.
Understand the EB-2 versus EB-3 classification for your role
Psychiatrists and licensed clinical psychologists with doctoral degrees typically qualify under EB-2 as advanced-degree professionals. Licensed counselors and social workers with master's degrees often fall under EB-3. The classification affects your priority date queue, especially if you're from a high-demand country.
Ask employers to specify the PERM wage level during the offer stage
DOL assigns prevailing wage at Levels I through IV under PERM. Mental health employers sometimes default to Level I, which can create problems if your actual duties match a higher-level position. Use the OFLC Wage Search to cross-check before accepting an offer letter.
Green Card Mental Health: Frequently Asked Questions
Which mental health roles are most commonly sponsored for green cards?
Psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, and psychologists are the roles most frequently sponsored through PERM. Hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and state-run behavioral health agencies sponsor the most petitions because they have dedicated HR infrastructure for immigration compliance and face persistent shortages in licensed clinical staff.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for mental health professionals?
H-1B visa is a temporary status with a three-year initial period and annual lottery risk. PERM-based green card sponsorship is permanent and has no lottery. EB-3 petitions for most countries outside India and China move relatively quickly through the priority date queue. The PERM process takes longer upfront, typically 12 to 24 months from labor certification through I-140 approval, but the outcome is permanent residency rather than a renewable temporary visa.
Can a community mental health center or nonprofit sponsor a green card?
Yes. Nonprofit community mental health centers and Federally Qualified Health Centers sponsor green cards through the same PERM process as for-profit hospitals. Some nonprofits qualify as USCIS-designated cap-exempt H-1B employers for temporary visas, but for green cards, all employers follow the same EB-2 and EB-3 PERM pathway regardless of tax-exempt status.
How do I find mental health employers that actively sponsor green cards?
Start with Migrate Mate, which lets you search mental health roles filtered by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Cross-reference with DOL PERM disclosure data, which is publicly available and shows which employers have filed labor certifications for specific job titles. Prioritizing employers with prior filings reduces the risk of your sponsorship stalling because the employer is unfamiliar with the process.
Does my foreign mental health degree qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
EB-2 requires an advanced degree, typically a master's or doctorate, or a bachelor's degree plus five years of progressive experience in the field. EB-3 covers professionals with a U.S. bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent. USCIS evaluates foreign degrees through credential evaluation reports. For mental health roles, the degree field must align with the clinical position, not just the education level, so a general business degree won't satisfy a licensed counselor role.
