ABOUT THE JOB
As a Generative AI (GenAI) Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Google Cloud, you are an embedded builder who bridges the gap between frontier AI products and production-grade reality within customers. Unlike traditional advisory roles, you will function as an innovator-builder, moving beyond high-level architecture to code, debug, and jointly ship bespoke agentic solutions directly within the customer’s environment. This role is designed for high-agency engineers with a founder’s mindset. You will address blockers to production including solving the integration complexities, data readiness issues, and state-management issues that prevent AI from reaching enterprise-grade maturity. By embedding with strategic accounts, you will serve a dual purpose: providing white glove deployment of complex AI systems and acting as a critical feedback loop, transforming real-world field insights into Google Cloud’s future product roadmap.
It's an exciting time to join Google Cloud’s Go-To-Market team, leading the AI revolution for businesses worldwide. You’ll excel by leveraging Google's brand credibility—a legacy built on inventing foundational technologies and proven at scale. We’ll provide you with the world's most advanced AI portfolio, including frontier Gemini models, and the complete Vertex AI platform, helping you to solve business problems. We’re a collaborative culture providing direct access to DeepMind's engineering and research minds, empowering you to solve customer challenges. Join us to be the catalyst for our mission, drive customer success, and define the new cloud era—the market is yours.

- Architect and code the connective tissue between Google’s AI products and customer's live infrastructure, including APIs, legacy data silos, and security perimeters as part of an expert team.
- Build high-performance evaluation pipelines and observability frameworks to ensure agentic systems meet rigorous requirements for accuracy, safety, and latency.
- Identify repeatable field patterns and friction points in Google’s AI stack, converting them into reusable modules or formal product feature requests for the Engineering teams.
- Co-build with Customer Engineering teams to instill Google-grade development best practices, ensuring long-term project success and high end-user adoption.

Document your client-facing technical work
PERM requires your employer to define the role's minimum requirements precisely. Gather performance reviews, project scopes, and client deliverables that demonstrate the specialized engineering skills the position demands, not just general software development.
Target employers with dedicated immigration programs
Forward Deployed roles often sit within enterprise software or defense-tech firms. Prioritize companies that already have in-house immigration counsel or established PERM workflows, since ad-hoc sponsorship for this niche role type is slower and riskier.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by employers with active EB-2 or EB-3 filing history for software engineering roles. Migrate Mate surfaces companies that have completed PERM labor certifications, so you're targeting firms with a proven sponsorship track record.
Understand how deployment scope affects PERM job descriptions
If your role requires frequent travel to client sites across multiple states, your employer may need to file separate LCAs for each worksite state. Clarify this with HR before your PERM petition is drafted to avoid refiling delays.
Use O*NET to align your credentials with the job classification
Forward Deployed Software Engineers are often classified under software developer or systems analyst SOC codes. Check the O*NET occupation profile for your likely classification to ensure your degree field and experience align with DOL's definition before your employer files.
Request the prevailing wage determination early in negotiations
Your employer must submit a Prevailing Wage Determination to DOL before starting PERM recruitment. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the wage level tied to your job zone and location, so your offered salary won't trigger a wage-compliance deficiency during adjudication.
Green Card Forward Deployed Software Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Forward Deployed Software Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories are available depending on the position's stated requirements. EB-2 applies when the employer requires a U.S. master's degree or foreign equivalent as a minimum. EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree. Because Forward Deployed Engineers typically need a specialized four-year degree in computer science or a related field, EB-3 professional sponsorship is the most common path, though EB-2 is feasible when the employer can justify the advanced-degree requirement in the PERM job description.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status capped at 85,000 slots annually and subject to a lottery. PERM-based green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency, not a temporary authorization window. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM recruitment and I-140 adjudication typically add 12 to 24 months before you reach adjustment of status, compared to H-1B's faster initial approval. For many nationalities outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates are current, making the total wait comparable.
How can I find Forward Deployed Software Engineer jobs where the employer is already open to green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by employers with confirmed PERM and I-140 filing history for software engineering roles, so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness during outreach. This is especially useful for Forward Deployed roles, where the client-travel component sometimes makes employers hesitant to initiate PERM without being asked directly.
Can frequent client-site travel complicate my employer's PERM filing?
Yes. DOL requires a Labor Condition Application for each state where you'll work more than 30 workdays in a year. If your Forward Deployed role involves rotating deployments across multiple states, your employer must file additional LCAs and post wage notices at each worksite. Employers unfamiliar with multi-state LCA requirements sometimes delay PERM filings or draft job descriptions that understate travel scope, which creates compliance risk later.
What happens to my green card process if I change employers before the I-485 is approved?
Under AC21 portability, you can change employers after your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For Forward Deployed Software Engineers, a move to a comparable software engineering role at another firm generally qualifies. Your priority date is preserved, but your new employer cannot use the original PERM petition, so confirm portability eligibility with an immigration professional before switching.
