Verify your NP credentials meet PERM requirements
PERM requires your foreign nursing degree and NP certification to be U.S.-equivalent. Get a credential evaluation from a NCSBN-recognized body before applying, so employers don't discover gaps during DOL's audit review.
Target GI practices with hospital system backing
Solo gastroenterology practices rarely have the HR infrastructure to run PERM recruitment. Focus on multi-site GI groups and hospital-affiliated practices, where immigration sponsorship workflows are already in place for clinical staff.
Search green-card-sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by role and sponsorship type to find gastroenterology employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 PERM filings. Migrate Mate surfaces this data directly so you're not guessing which employers will sponsor before you apply.
Request a prevailing-wage determination early
Your employer must submit a prevailing-wage request to OFLC before opening PERM recruitment. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the NP SOC code for your specific GI role and region before salary negotiations begin.
Understand how CGFNS affects your EB-3 timeline
If your nursing degree is from outside the U.S., CGFNS certification is typically required for state licensure, and licensure must be confirmed before USCIS approves the I-140. Factor in CGFNS processing when planning your green card timeline.
Negotiate a PERM filing commitment in your offer letter
Ask for a written clause committing to PERM initiation within a defined period after your start date. Without this, employers can delay indefinitely, and the EB-3 priority date you need to lock in won't begin accruing.
Green Card Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Gastroenterology NP role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Gastroenterology NP positions qualify for both EB-2 and EB-3, depending on how the employer structures the job requirements. EB-2 applies when the role requires a master's degree in nursing or an advanced clinical credential. EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree plus licensure. Your employer's attorney defines the classification when filing the PERM application with DOL.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for NPs in GI?
H-1B visa sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual cap lottery, which means approval isn't guaranteed. EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual cap on petitions filed, and the outcome is permanent residency rather than a two- or three-year status. The trade-off is time: PERM, I-140, and adjustment of status can take two to four years for many nationalities, while H-1B status can start sooner if you're selected.
What does the PERM process look like for a Gastroenterology NP employer?
The employer starts by requesting a prevailing-wage determination from OFLC, then conducts mandatory domestic recruitment over 30 to 60 days to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers were displaced. If recruitment is complete, the employer files the ETA Form 9089 with DOL. Processing can take six months to over a year depending on audit activity. Only after PERM certification does the employer file the I-140 petition with USCIS.
How can I find Gastroenterology NP jobs where the employer is already open to green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Gastroenterology NP roles with employers who have a documented history of EB-2 and EB-3 PERM filings. Rather than asking during an interview whether an employer will sponsor, you can target only those with confirmed green card sponsorship activity from the start of your search.
Does my state NP license affect my ability to start work while the green card is pending?
Yes. You must hold a valid NP license in the state where you'll practice before starting work, regardless of your green card stage. If you're already on a work-authorized status like H-1B or TN visa, you can continue practicing during PERM and I-140 processing. Once you reach the adjustment-of-status stage, you can file for an EAD with USCIS, which provides work authorization independent of your underlying visa status.
