Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Health Information Management
Align your credentials to PERM requirements
PERM requires your education and experience to match the job description exactly. A degree in health information management, health informatics, or a closely related field strengthens your labor certification case and reduces the risk of a DOL audit.
Target employers with active EB-3 filing history
Large health systems, academic medical centers, and hospital networks file PERM petitions far more frequently than small clinics. Search Migrate Mate to identify employers who have sponsored green cards for health information roles specifically.
Verify your role's O*NET classification early
Health information management jobs span several O*NET codes, and the one your employer uses on the PERM application must accurately reflect your actual duties. A mismatch between job duties and the SOC code can trigger a DOL audit or denial.
Check prevailing wages before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific job title and location before accepting an offer. Your employer must pay at least the DOL-certified prevailing wage, so knowing the number protects you during salary discussions.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility with your employer
Roles requiring a bachelor's degree qualify for EB-3; roles requiring a master's degree or specialized credentials like RHIA can qualify for EB-2. Ask the employer which category they plan to file under, since it affects your priority date and wait time.
Confirm USCIS filing intent before accepting an offer
Not every employer willing to extend a job offer is prepared to sponsor a green card. Before signing, ask HR directly whether they have sponsored EB-2 or EB-3 petitions before and whether their legal team handles PERM filings in-house or through outside counsel.

Find Health Information Management JobsHealth Information Management Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do health information management jobs qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories apply depending on the role's requirements. EB-3 covers positions that require a bachelor's degree, which includes most health information management analyst and specialist roles. EB-2 applies when the employer requires a master's degree or equivalent advanced credentials such as the RHIA with substantial specialized experience. Your employer specifies the category in the PERM application.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this field?
H-1B is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery, while PERM leads to permanent residency with no cap at the EB-3 level for most countries. The PERM process requires your employer to complete a supervised labor market test before filing your I-140 petition, making it more involved but resulting in a path to a green card rather than a renewable temporary status.
How long does the PERM and EB-3 green card process take for health information management professionals?
DOL currently processes most PERM applications within six to twelve months, though audited cases take longer. After PERM certification, your employer files an I-140 petition with USCIS, and you file I-485 to adjust status once a visa number is available. For most countries outside India and China, the full process from PERM filing to green card approval can take two to four years.
Where can I find employers who sponsor green cards for health information management roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search for health information management jobs specifically filtered by employers with employment-based green card sponsorship history. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a specific employer does not sponsor PERM petitions for this job category.
Can I switch employers after my I-140 is approved but before I receive my green card?
Yes, under AC21 portability rules you can change employers after your I-140 has been approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Health information management roles generally port well within the broader health informatics and health services category, but confirm the SOC code match with your attorney before switching.
