Verify your MSW credential equivalency early
U.S. employers filing PERM need your foreign degree evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service. A master's-level equivalency determination supports EB-2 classification and avoids delays during DOL audit review.
Target hospital systems with PERM filing history
Large health systems and federally qualified health centers file PERM regularly for licensed clinical roles. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data by SOC code 21-1022 to identify employers who have sponsored Medical Social Workers before.
Search EB-3 sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by Medical Social Worker roles with active green card sponsorship using Migrate Mate. The platform surfaces employers with verified PERM and I-140 filing history, so you're applying where sponsorship is already established practice.
Confirm your state license transfers before relocating
PERM ties your sponsorship to a specific employer and work location. If your clinical social work license doesn't transfer to that state, you'll face a licensing gap that can stall the DOL labor certification process entirely.
Ask employers about prevailing wage level at offer stage
DOL requires PERM-sponsored wages to meet the prevailing wage for your location and job duties. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV range for SOC 21-1022 before negotiating your offer.
Understand the PERM recruitment documentation window
Your employer must complete mandatory recruitment steps, including job postings and SWA listings, within a 180-day window before filing with DOL. Gaps in their documentation are a leading cause of PERM audit or denial.
Green Card Medical Social Worker: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Social Worker role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Medical Social Worker positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers requiring at least a bachelor's degree, though roles requiring an MSW and clinical licensure often support EB-2 classification as advanced-degree professionals. The determining factor is how the employer defines the minimum requirements in the PERM job description, not simply what you hold.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for this role?
Green card sponsorship through PERM targets permanent residency rather than a temporary status. Unlike H-1B visa, there is no annual lottery at the EB-3 level for most nationalities, though country-of-birth backlogs apply to India and China. The process takes longer overall, typically two to five years, but results in lawful permanent residency rather than a visa you must continually renew.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for employers hiring Medical Social Workers?
Your employer files an ETA Form 9089 with DOL after completing mandatory recruitment steps to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers were available. For Medical Social Worker roles, this includes posting through state workforce agencies and professional publications. DOL reviews the application and either certifies it or issues an audit request, which can add six to twelve months to the timeline.
How can I find Medical Social Worker jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history, showing Medical Social Worker roles at employers who have filed PERM or I-140 petitions before. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying and helps you prioritize organizations with demonstrated sponsorship capacity in the clinical social work field.
Can my clinical social work licensure from another country count toward PERM eligibility?
Foreign credentials do not automatically satisfy U.S. state licensure requirements. You'll typically need a NACES-approved credential evaluation confirming your degree is equivalent to a U.S. MSW, then apply for state licensure separately. PERM job requirements are defined by the employer, so confirm the posting specifies your credential path as an acceptable qualification before applying.
