Green Card School Nurse Jobs
School Nurse roles qualify for EB-3 sponsorship under PERM labor certification when U.S. employers can demonstrate no qualified domestic candidates are available. Registered nurses with a BSN and active state licensure are the most competitive applicants. Many public school districts and K-12 charter networks actively file I-140 petitions for foreign-trained nurses.

Verify your credentials before applying
CGFNS certification and a state RN license are prerequisites before any employer can file your PERM application. Start the credential evaluation early because state boards vary widely in processing timelines, and some require NCLEX retesting for foreign-trained nurses.
Target school districts with E-Verify enrollment
Public school districts enrolled in E-Verify are already set up to hire and sponsor foreign workers. Filter your search to districts in states with teacher and nurse shortages, where PERM filings for school nurses appear most frequently in DOL disclosure data.
Search green card sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find school districts and K-12 healthcare staffing firms with active green card sponsorship history. Filtering by EB-3 petition history narrows your list to employers already familiar with the PERM process for nursing roles.
Clarify the PERM timeline during offer negotiations
PERM labor certification currently takes 12 to 18 months at the DOL before the I-140 can be filed. Ask your prospective employer directly whether they have immigration counsel on retainer and whether they have filed PERM for nurses before.
Understand how EB-3 prevailing wage affects your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for school nurses in their specific county, which you can look up yourself using the OFLC Wage Search. Accepting a lower salary could invalidate your PERM filing even after approval.
Request concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing if eligible
If your priority date is current when PERM is approved, ask your employer's immigration attorney about filing the I-140 and I-485 concurrently. This can shorten your total wait to a green card by several months compared to sequential filing.
Green Card School Nurse: Frequently Asked Questions
Do School Nurse roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most school nurse positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers requiring a BSN and active RN licensure. EB-2 sponsorship is possible for advanced-degree professionals, such as those holding an MSN or specialty certification in school nursing, if the employer documents that the role genuinely requires that advanced degree.
How is PERM green card sponsorship different from H-1B sponsorship for a school nurse?
PERM sponsorship leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status tied to one employer. There is no annual lottery, so EB-3 petitions for most nationalities face no cap uncertainty the way H-1B visa registrations do. The tradeoff is time: PERM labor certification plus I-140 adjudication typically adds 18 to 30 months before adjustment of status can be approved.
Which types of employers sponsor green cards for school nurses?
Public school districts, charter school networks, and K-12 health services contractors are the most active sponsors. Large urban districts in states with documented nurse shortages file the most PERM applications. Some private and parochial schools also sponsor, though less frequently because they carry the full legal and filing cost without state reimbursement programs.
How can I find school nurse jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for employers with employment-based green card filing history, so you're not cold-applying to districts that have never sponsored a foreign worker. Filtering by EB-3 petition history and job title narrows results to sponsors who already understand the PERM process for nursing roles.
Can I work while my green card application is pending as a school nurse?
Yes. Once your I-485 adjustment of status application is pending, USCIS allows you to apply for an Employment Authorization Document, letting you continue working even if your underlying visa status changes. Many school nurses also maintain H-1B or TN visa status as a backup during the adjustment period to preserve employer-specific work authorization.
