Verify your NCCPA certification transfers correctly
USCIS reviews foreign PA credentials through a combination of degree equivalency and state licensure. Confirm your NCCPA certification and any foreign medical training aligns with the specialty occupation definition before your employer files the PERM application.
Target pediatric health systems with PERM history
Children's hospitals and large pediatric group practices file PERM applications far more often than solo or small outpatient clinics. Focus your search on employers whose hiring patterns show a track record of sponsoring clinical staff for permanent residency.
Search sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Pediatric Physician Assistant roles by green card sponsorship history. Seeing which employers have filed PERM applications for PA roles saves you from pursuing positions where sponsorship is unlikely to be offered.
Ask about the prevailing wage tier before accepting
DOL assigns a wage tier during PERM that affects both your offer letter and the recruitment process. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the prevailing wage for your metro area so you can confirm the offer meets the required level before signing.
Understand EB-2 versus EB-3 eligibility for your credentials
A master's degree in physician assistant studies typically supports EB-2 classification for advanced-degree professionals, while a bachelor's-level PA degree routes through EB-3. Clarify with your employer which category they intend to file under, since this affects your priority date timeline.
Request that your employer start PERM before your H-1B renewal
PERM labor certification can take 12 to 18 months before you even reach the I-140 stage. If you're currently on H-1B visa status, ask your employer to initiate PERM at least two years before your six-year H-1B limit to avoid a gap in status.
Green Card Pediatric Physician Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Pediatric Physician Assistant roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories are available depending on your degree. A master's degree in physician assistant studies qualifies you as an advanced-degree professional under EB-2. A bachelor's-level PA degree routes through EB-3 as a skilled worker. Your employer selects the category when filing PERM, so confirm which one applies to your credentials before the process begins.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Pediatric PA roles?
Green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary work authorization period. Unlike H-1B, there is no annual lottery for EB-3 petitions, and the process is not capped by registration cycles. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM, I-140, and adjustment of status combined typically take two to four years depending on your country of birth and USCIS processing queues.
What credentials does USCIS expect when reviewing a Pediatric PA green card petition?
USCIS looks at your accredited PA degree, active NCCPA certification, and state licensure in the state where you'll practice. Foreign-trained applicants may need a credential evaluation to establish degree equivalency. Your employer's PERM application also defines the minimum requirements for the role, so those must match your actual qualifications exactly.
How can I find employers who sponsor Pediatric PA roles for green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search Pediatric Physician Assistant positions filtered by employers with green card sponsorship history. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to practices that have never filed PERM applications for clinical staff. Children's hospitals and pediatric health systems are the most active sponsoring employer type in this specialty.
Can my employer start PERM while I am still on OPT or H-1B status?
Yes. PERM labor certification is independent of your current nonimmigrant status. Your employer can begin the DOL recruitment and filing process while you remain authorized to work under OPT or H-1B. Starting early matters because the PERM stage alone can take 12 to 18 months, and you'll want your I-140 filed before any status deadline approaches.
