Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in OT
Verify your credentials before PERM begins
PERM requires your foreign OT degree to be evaluated against U.S. standards. A credential evaluation from a CGFNS-recognized body, combined with your NBCOT certification, gives employers the documentation they need to file without delays.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Large health systems, skilled nursing facility chains, and pediatric hospitals file PERM regularly for OTs. Prioritize employers who have sponsored foreign workers before, they already have immigration counsel and established filing workflows.
Negotiate state licensure support in your offer
Some states require OT licensure before you can start work, but licensure can take weeks. Ask your prospective employer to cover the licensing fees and confirm whether they'll support a delayed start date while your application processes.
Search PERM-sponsoring OT employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter OT roles by employers with verified green card sponsorship history. This cuts the research time of manually cross-referencing DOL PERM disclosure data and surfaces active opportunities faster.
Understand how the OFLC Wage Search affects your offer
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage determined by DOL's OFLC Wage Search for your OT role and work location. Check this figure yourself before signing, accepting a lower offer can complicate or invalidate the PERM filing.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 pathway with your employer
OTs with a master's degree may qualify for EB-2, which can mean a shorter priority date wait for some nationalities. If you hold only a bachelor's, EB-3 is the standard route. Confirm which category your employer's attorney plans to file under before your case starts.

Find OT JobsOT Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do OT jobs commonly qualify for green card sponsorship?
Yes. Occupational therapist is a specialty occupation that meets PERM labor certification requirements, and OT shortages in many regions make it easier for employers to demonstrate recruitment efforts. Hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities regularly sponsor OTs through the EB-3 category, and those with a master's degree may qualify under EB-2.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for OTs?
H-1B is a temporary work visa with an annual cap and lottery, while an employment-based green card leads to permanent residency with no annual cap at the EB-3 petition level. The PERM process takes longer overall, but there's no lottery risk. For OTs from most countries, EB-3 priority dates are currently current, meaning the wait after I-140 approval can be relatively short.
Where can I find OT jobs with employers who sponsor green cards?
Use Migrate Mate to search OT roles filtered by employers with confirmed green card sponsorship history. This is more reliable than searching general job boards, where sponsorship details are often vague or missing. Migrate Mate pulls from DOL PERM data so you can verify an employer's actual filing history before applying.
What documentation do I need to support my PERM application as a foreign OT?
You'll need a foreign credential evaluation confirming your OT degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or master's, your NBCOT certification, and state licensure in the state where you'll be working. Your employer's immigration attorney will also need evidence of the recruitment process DOL requires before PERM can be filed.
Can my employer file PERM while I'm on an H-1B or other temporary status?
Yes. Many OTs begin the PERM process while working on H-1B or other temporary authorization. Filing PERM does not affect your current visa status, and an approved I-140 can be used to extend H-1B status beyond six years under AC21 portability rules. Starting PERM early gives you more flexibility if your temporary status approaches its limit.
