Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship in Plumber
Document your trade credentials before applying
Gather your journeyman or master plumber license, apprenticeship completion records, and union cards before contacting employers. PERM requires your employer to verify your qualifications meet the advertised job requirements, so gaps in documentation slow the process.
Target contractors enrolled in E-Verify
Commercial plumbing contractors and mechanical subcontractors on federal construction projects must use E-Verify, which signals an established process for hiring and sponsoring foreign workers. Focus your search on firms with federal or municipal contract history.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters plumber and pipefitter roles by employers with active green card sponsorship history, saving you from cold-applying to contractors who have never filed a PERM. Start your search there before reaching out to hiring managers.
Understand how prevailing wage affects your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your plumber classification and work location before PERM is certified. Look up your area's wage level using the OFLC Wage Search so you can evaluate whether an offer meets the requirement.
Negotiate a written sponsorship commitment before accepting
Ask for a signed sponsorship agreement that outlines who pays PERM filing costs and attorney fees before you accept an offer. USCIS rules prohibit employers from passing certain immigration costs onto you, but getting this in writing avoids disputes later.
Verify your occupation qualifies under EB-3
Plumbers typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers because the role requires at least two years of training or experience. Confirm your specific job title matches the O*NET occupational profile your employer will use in the PERM application.
Green Card Plumber: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a plumber qualify for an employment-based green card?
Yes. Plumbers qualify under the EB-3 skilled worker category, which covers occupations requiring at least two years of training or experience, including licensed trades. Your employer sponsors you through PERM labor certification, then files an I-140 immigrant petition on your behalf. There is no lottery and no annual cap at the petition level, though visa availability depends on your country of birth.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for plumbing jobs?
The H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant visa designed for specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree, and plumbing roles rarely qualify. Green card sponsorship through EB-3 leads to permanent residency with no renewal required. There is no H-1B-style annual lottery at the EB-3 level, and the PERM process directly ties your employer's sponsorship to a permanent position rather than a time-limited work authorization.
How long does the PERM and green card process take for a plumber?
Plan for 18 to 36 months from PERM filing to receiving your green card if you were born outside India or China, where backlogs are minimal for EB-3 skilled workers. PERM adjudication currently averages several months at DOL, followed by I-140 processing at USCIS, then adjustment of status or consular processing. Audit selection at the PERM stage can add 12 or more months.
What credentials do I need to qualify for EB-3 sponsorship as a plumber?
Most employers require a journeyman plumber license issued by your state or a recognized apprenticeship completion certificate covering at least four years of on-the-job training. Your employer's PERM job description will specify the minimum requirements, and you must meet every listed criterion at the time of filing. If you hold a master plumber license, that strengthens your application without changing the EB-3 category.
How do I find employers willing to sponsor a plumber for a green card?
Most plumbing contractors have never sponsored a foreign worker and may not know the process. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers in the plumbing and pipefitting industry that have an active green card sponsorship track record. Targeting companies that have completed PERM filings before dramatically shortens your search, since those employers already have immigration counsel and internal processes in place.
