Green Card Quality Assurance Engineer Jobs
Quality Assurance Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM labor certification, which requires your employer to document the hiring process before filing your I-140 petition. PERM ties the sponsorship to a specific role and employer, so identifying companies with active green card filing history is the most direct path to permanent residency.

Itron is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water. We create a more resourceful world to protect essential resources for today and tomorrow. Join us.
Itron DEM (Distributed Energy Management) is the industry's leading provider of integrated cloud-based demand response, energy efficiency and customer engagement solutions that enable electric utilities to ensure grid reliability, lower energy costs, meet regulatory demands and enhance the customer experience. Through its combination of software, hardware, and services, Itron DEM helps utilities optimize every aspect of a demand management program, from participant recruitment and device installation to call center support, control events and measurement and verification.
Itron is seeking a Software Quality Engineer based in Liberty Lake, WA whose primary focus is running our device lab and ensuring DEM software works correctly with the physical devices it controls. You will set up and maintain a wide range of devices — for example, purchasing, installing, and configuring a smart thermostat — and then test how DEM software connects to and operates them. Setup often requires coordinating across teams: working with IT to open network ports, with networking to grant DEM software access, and with security to get access approved. Devices like thermostats are set up standalone in the lab rather than wired into a live HVAC system or furnace, so you may need wiring help from other business units to make the thermostat believe it's properly connected.
Because Itron also manufactures its own distributed energy resources (DERs), such as load control switches, you may be working with early or partially built hardware — receiving an initial part, coordinating assembly support, and standing up the device in the lab before software testing can begin. Some DERs communicate over networks like cellular or GenX, so you'll also install and configure the necessary network equipment, such as a cellular access point. Since the team is distributed across time zones, you're also responsible for making the lab remotely accessible — for example, setting up cameras so teammates can observe devices at any hour, and enabling remote power cycling so the team can test power outage scenarios and troubleshoot devices without being physically present.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory devices, including smart thermostats, load control switches, and other distributed energy resources (DERs) used to validate DEM software functionality.
- Install, configure, and maintain supporting network infrastructure, including cellular connectivity solutions and other communication equipment required for device operation.
- Collaborate with IT, networking, security, and cross-functional engineering teams to establish and maintain device connectivity, access permissions, and lab readiness.
- Support the integration and testing of new and prototype hardware, including early-stage DER products, by coordinating assembly, setup, and validation activities.
- Maintain remote access capabilities for a globally distributed team through cameras, remote monitoring solutions, and remote power-cycling capabilities.
- Proactively communicate device availability, testing readiness, maintenance schedules, and outage status to stakeholders, helping ensure lab operations support project timelines and team commitments.
- Develop and execute manual software test plans, test cases, and test procedures to validate product functionality, quality, and reliability.
- Identify, document, prioritize, and track software defects through resolution while partnering with engineering teams to support root cause analysis.
- Report test results, communicate quality risks, and provide actionable feedback that supports continuous product improvement.
- Participate in feature reviews, sprint activities, and quality planning discussions to develop a thorough understanding of product functionality and testing requirements.
- Demonstrate accountability, agility, collaboration, and continuous learning while supporting innovative solutions for utility customers.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 0-2 years of professional experience in software quality assurance, software testing, engineering, or a related technical field, including internships, co-op experience, academic projects, or entry-level roles.
- Experience performing software testing, including test case creation, execution, and defect reporting.
- Basic familiarity with Linux operating systems and Git version control.
- Exposure to at least one programming or scripting language.
- Ability to perform hands-on technical work, including device setup, wiring, hardware configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across multiple teams and proactively follow up on dependencies.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot or Claude.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and quickly learn new technologies and processes.
- Ability to work on-site a minimum of three days per week, with additional on-site presence as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform frequent bending, squatting, standing, and walking in an office/lab environment.
- Travel: 1-10%.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Exposure to REST API testing tools and methodologies.
- Familiarity with Agile software development practices.
- Exposure to Docker, containerization technologies, or virtualized test environments.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- Familiarity with IoT, cellular, wireless, or connected-device networking concepts.
- Experience working with hardware/software integrated systems.
- Exposure to distributed energy resources (DERs), smart grid technologies, utility operations, or energy management solutions.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Quality Assurance Engineer
Document your QA credentials before applying
PERM requires your employer to prove no qualified U.S. worker is available for your specific role. Having your degree evaluations, testing certifications, and QA methodology experience clearly documented speeds up that process and reduces the risk of audit delays.
Search Migrate Mate to find QA employers with green card history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Quality Assurance Engineer roles by employers who have previously filed green card petitions. That filing history signals the employer already understands PERM timelines and has internal HR or legal infrastructure to sponsor you.
Target EB-3 roles if your degree is in an adjacent field
QA Engineer positions often accept computer science, industrial engineering, or electrical engineering degrees. EB-3 covers professionals whose degree field isn't an exact match, so don't rule out postings that list a preferred discipline different from yours.
Verify prevailing wage using the OFLC Wage Search
Before accepting an offer tied to green card sponsorship, check the OFLC Wage Search for your job title and work location. Your employer's PERM filing must certify your offered salary meets the prevailing wage, and mismatches are a common cause of certification delays.
Confirm your employer uses E-Verify before your PERM starts
PERM filings are submitted through the DOL FLAG system, and employers who haven't navigated government labor portals before sometimes underestimate the setup time. Ask your HR contact whether the company uses E-Verify and has filed PERM applications previously.
Negotiate your job title to match the PERM description exactly
USCIS scrutinizes whether your actual duties match the role described in the PERM application. If your offer letter calls you a QA Engineer but your work includes senior-level responsibilities, the petition can face a Request for Evidence. Align your title and duties before the application is filed.
Green Card Quality Assurance Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Quality Assurance Engineer roles qualify for both EB-2 and EB-3 green card categories?
Yes. QA Engineer positions typically qualify under EB-3 when the role requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. If the role requires an advanced degree or the candidate holds a master's or higher with strong professional credentials, EB-2 may apply. Your employer's PERM filing will specify which category is appropriate based on the minimum job requirements.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for QA Engineers?
H-1B visa is a temporary status with a three-year initial period and an annual lottery cap that creates real uncertainty. PERM-based green card sponsorship has no lottery and leads to permanent residency. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status typically take two to four years or longer for some nationalities. The outcome, however, is permanent authorization rather than a visa you must continuously renew.
What does the PERM labor certification process look like for a QA Engineer role?
Your employer files a PERM application with the DOL certifying they conducted a good-faith recruitment effort and found no qualified, available U.S. worker for your specific QA Engineer position. The recruitment must follow strict DOL requirements, including advertising the role at the prevailing wage. Once DOL certifies the PERM, your employer files the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS, and you proceed to adjustment of status or consular processing.
How do I find QA Engineer jobs where the employer is already prepared to sponsor a green card?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search Quality Assurance Engineer roles filtered by employers with verified green card filing history. An employer who has previously sponsored PERM petitions already has legal counsel, HR workflows, and budget allocated for immigration, which significantly reduces the risk that your sponsorship stalls due to internal inexperience.
Can my employer start PERM sponsorship while I'm on H-1B or OPT status?
Yes. PERM labor certification is not tied to your current visa status. Employers routinely initiate the green card process for QA Engineers who are already working on H-1B. If you're on OPT, an employer can begin PERM at any time, though the I-485 adjustment of status cannot be filed until a visa number is available for your category and country of birth.
