Translate your architecture credentials for PERM
PERM requires the employer to document that your role demands a specific degree in a matching field. Gather transcripts, certifications like AWS Solutions Architect or TOGAF, and employer letters that tie your credentials directly to the job requirements before applications begin.
Target employers with active EB-2 filing history
Search DOL PERM disclosure data and OFLC labor condition filings to identify companies that have sponsored Systems Architect or similar enterprise architecture roles before. Prior filings signal an in-house process that reduces your sponsorship timeline considerably.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate lets you search Systems Architect openings filtered by employers with green card sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never filed a PERM. Start your search there before reaching out to recruiters.
Clarify the EB-2 versus EB-3 track early
If your role's minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree, the employer may file EB-3 even if you hold a master's. Confirm with the hiring team which category they intend to file under before accepting an offer, since it affects your priority date and wait time.
Understand the PERM supervised recruitment window
DOL requires employers to run a supervised recruitment campaign before certifying the PERM. This typically spans 30 to 60 days and must follow strict advertising rules. Delays here push back your I-140 filing, so ask the employer about their timeline at the offer stage.
Verify your job duties align with O*NET
USCIS uses O*NET occupation data to assess whether Systems Architect duties constitute a specialty occupation. Review the O*NET profile for your SOC code and confirm your offer letter describes duties that match the defined knowledge and skill requirements, not generic IT management tasks.
Green Card Systems Architect: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Systems Architect role typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most Systems Architect positions qualify for EB-2 when the employer sets an advanced degree as the minimum requirement, which is common for senior or principal-level roles. Junior or mid-level positions where a bachelor's degree is sufficient typically fall under EB-3. The employer controls which category they file, so confirm this before signing an offer letter.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for a Systems Architect?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant visa with a 65,000-slot annual cap and a lottery, while EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship is permanent and has no annual cap on petition filings. The PERM process adds roughly 12 to 24 months before you even reach the I-140 stage, but the outcome is lawful permanent residency rather than a status you must renew every three years.
What documentation should I prepare before a Systems Architect PERM filing?
You'll need official transcripts for every degree you hold, foreign credential evaluations if your degrees are from outside the United States, and employer reference letters that describe your specific technical responsibilities. For Systems Architects, certifications like TOGAF, AWS Solutions Architect, or Zachman Framework credentials can strengthen the specialty occupation argument during USCIS adjudication of the I-140.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a green card for a Systems Architect role?
Use Migrate Mate to search Systems Architect openings filtered by employers with documented PERM and EB-2 or EB-3 filing history. Large technology firms, defense contractors, financial institutions, and healthcare systems regularly sponsor these roles because enterprise architecture is difficult to fill domestically. Targeting companies with prior filings shortens the internal approval process significantly.
Can I change employers after my I-140 is approved but before I receive my green card?
Yes. Once your I-140 has been approved for at least 180 days and you're in the adjustment of status stage, portability provisions under AC21 allow you to move to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification without losing your priority date. Systems Architect roles generally share enough SOC code overlap with related senior technical positions to qualify, but confirm with an immigration attorney before switching.
