Align your credentials to PERM job requirements
PERM requires your degree and experience to match the employer's posted job requirements exactly. A mismatch between your credentials and the PERM application can trigger an audit or denial, even if you're fully qualified for the actual work.
Use O*NET to validate your specialty occupation
Look up the Technical Specialist classification in O*NET before applying. If the occupation profile lists a specific degree field as typical entry-level education, that strengthens your EB-2 or EB-3 case and helps you frame your resume for sponsoring employers.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Not every company that hires Technical Specialists will sponsor a green card. Search for employers who have filed PERM applications for similar roles in the past. Migrate Mate surfaces this data so you can focus on companies already familiar with the process.
Verify the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
DOL sets a prevailing wage for your role and location that your employer must meet or exceed on the PERM application. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your job title and metro area before salary discussions so you know the floor your offer must clear.
Confirm your employer's E-Verify enrollment early
If your sponsoring employer is also hiring you on OPT or H-1B visa while the green card is pending, E-Verify enrollment may already be required. Confirming enrollment status before accepting an offer avoids compliance complications that could delay your PERM filing.
Ask HR directly about I-140 concurrent filing
Once PERM is certified, your employer files the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. For EB-3 Technical Specialist roles in most countries, asking whether your employer will file I-140 concurrently with PERM can cut months off your overall green card timeline.
Green Card Technical Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Specialist role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Technical Specialist positions typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers when the role requires at least two years of training or a bachelor's degree. If the position specifically requires an advanced degree or the employer can demonstrate the role demands specialized expertise beyond a standard four-year degree, EB-2 may apply. The PERM job description and your actual credentials both factor into which category fits.
How does the green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual lottery cap. A green card through PERM leads to permanent residency with no renewal requirement. The PERM process requires your employer to conduct a supervised DOL recruitment effort first, which H-1B does not. EB-3 green cards also have no lottery, though nationals from high-demand countries may face priority date backlogs that extend total wait times.
How long does PERM labor certification take for a Technical Specialist position?
USCIS and DOL operate on separate timelines. The PERM recruitment and filing process with DOL currently takes several months for standard processing, with analyst review timelines posted on the DOL OFLC website. If the application is audited, add several more months. After PERM certification, your employer files the I-140 with USCIS, and then you proceed to adjustment of status or consular processing depending on your situation.
Where can I find Technical Specialist jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by green card sponsorship intent, so you end up applying blindly and waiting to find out if an employer will sponsor. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Technical Specialist roles at employers with documented PERM and green card sponsorship history, so you're targeting companies that have already gone through this process for similar roles.
Can my employer start the PERM process while I'm on a work visa?
Yes. Employers commonly begin PERM labor certification while you're working on H-1B or another nonimmigrant status. Starting early matters because your priority date is set when PERM is filed, not when it's approved. A longer time between PERM filing and I-485 adjustment of status also gives you more AC21 portability options if you need to change employers later.
