Position Summary:
Instruct group classes; provide excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Job Schedule: Shifts vary 7 days a week with mornings and afternoon/evening options.
Essential Functions:
- Lead group classes to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
- Conduct energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes.
- Build effective relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Maintain working knowledge of class and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Keep accurate class attendance records.
- Keep up with time card.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
- Dress in appropriate attire for class.
- Responsible for ensuring the aerobics room is clean. Placing all equipment back in its place, and turning all lights off.
- Arrange a substitute when absent.
- All instructors will be financially responsible for their initial certification. The YMCA may assist with renewal CEC's to keep their certification updated and active. All instructors will sign a non-compete contract should they seek financial assistance from the Y to maintain their certification. Those choosing to be financially independent regarding their certification will not have to sign a non-compete contract.
- All instructors will be expected to attend 2 mandatory staff meetings per year.
Qualifications
- Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED.
- Certification in areas of expertise.
- Must have current driver’s license.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
Group Instructor Staff Expectations:
- Accept and demonstrate the Y’s values. Demonstrate a desire to serve others. Recruit members and build effective, supportive, working relationships with them.
- Work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions. Build rapport and relate well to others. Seek first to understand the other person’s point of view, and remain calm in challenging situations. Listen for understanding and meaning; speak and write effectively. Take initiative to assist in developing others.
- Make sound judgments, and transfer learning from one situation to another. Embrace new approaches and discover ideas to create a better member experience. Participate in meetings. Strive to meet or exceed a high-value experience for members.
- Pursue self-development that enhances job performance. Demonstrate an openness to change, and seek opportunities in the change process. Accurately assess personal feelings, strengths and limitations and how they impact relationships. Have the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; use best practices and demonstrate up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.
- Recognize that the YMCA depends on all staff working together and that being a team player means willingness to assist other staff members in doing whatever is needed; if you don’t know an answer, find out and follow-up.
- Be sure to clock in on arrival and out on departure; errors should be reported to your supervisor as soon as possible. Allowing someone else to handle a time card is fraud and could result in termination.
- Maintain strict confidentiality about “Y” business.
- Do not discuss personal issues/problems where members may overhear.
