Verify your degree maps to ABAP
USCIS evaluates whether your specific degree field directly relates to ABAP development work. A computer science or information systems degree is straightforward. An unrelated degree may require a credential evaluation showing equivalency through coursework plus work experience.
Target SAP partner and implementation firms
SAP consulting firms and system integrators file H-1B petitions for ABAP Developers far more consistently than general tech employers. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B LCA filing history in SAP-related roles before applying.
Confirm the LCA wage tier before accepting an offer
Your offer salary must meet the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the Software Developers occupation code before negotiating, so you know which wage level the employer's LCA must certify.
Ask about cap-exempt filing options
Some SAP implementation projects run through universities or nonprofits that qualify as cap-exempt H-1B sponsors. If you've already used one lottery slot, a cap-exempt placement can let you work on an H-1B without re-entering the April registration.
Document SAP module specializations precisely
USCIS RFEs on ABAP petitions often challenge whether the role requires a specific degree rather than general IT skills. Your resume and support letter should name the exact SAP modules you develop in, tying each to degree-level knowledge requirements.
File premium processing if your start date is tight
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months. If your OPT end date or cap-gap window is close to October 1, premium processing upgrades your petition to a 15-business-day decision window, reducing the risk of a gap in work authorization.
H-1B Visa ABAP Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do ABAP Developer roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes. ABAP development falls under the Software Developers SOC code, which USCIS consistently recognizes as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. Employers listing ABAP as a core requirement strengthen the specialty occupation argument, particularly when the role involves custom SAP module development rather than general configuration work.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for ABAP Developers?
SAP consulting firms, system integrators, and large enterprises running SAP ERP environments are the most active H-1B sponsors for ABAP roles. Manufacturing, utilities, and financial services companies with in-house SAP teams also file regularly. Migrate Mate shows verified H-1B LCA filing history by employer and occupation, so you can identify which companies have actually sponsored ABAP or SAP developer roles before you apply.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new ABAP Developer role mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new employer files a transfer petition, as long as your original petition has been approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer files a new I-129 and LCA reflecting the ABAP role and work location. You don't need to re-enter the lottery.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect ABAP Developer offers?
Your employer's LCA must certify that your offered salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for the Software Developers occupation code in your specific work location. ABAP roles often fall at wage levels two or three given the specialization required. You can cross-check the applicable wage tiers using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating an offer, which helps you identify whether a salary is LCA-compliant.
What happens to my H-1B status if my SAP project ends and I'm benched?
H-1B status requires that your employer maintain the terms of the approved LCA, including paying the certified wage even during non-productive periods caused by the employer. Bench time initiated by the employer doesn't automatically terminate your status, but it creates compliance risk. If the role ends entirely, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer and file an H-1B transfer before your status lapses.
