Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Accounting Intern
Confirm your role meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires that an Accounting Intern position demand at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a directly related field. Review the job description for degree-specific language before applying, vague postings citing 'any business degree' can trigger an RFE.
Target firms enrolled in E-Verify
Public accounting firms and Fortune 500 finance departments that use E-Verify are more likely to have established H-1B sponsorship workflows. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history in accounting roles.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Look up the wage level for accounting occupations in your city using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you know the floor.
Time your internship-to-fulltime conversion carefully
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If your internship ends in summer, confirm your employer will convert you to full-time and file in time. A gap between OPT expiration and October 1 requires cap-gap protection.
Document your degree equivalency early
A three-year accounting degree from outside the U.S. may require a credential evaluation to establish equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Order a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member agency before your employer begins the H-1B petition, not after.
Ask about cap-exempt employer alternatives
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are cap-exempt and can file H-1B petitions year-round with no lottery. Some offer accounting internships in finance or grant management departments that qualify under the same specialty occupation standard.
H-1B Visa Accounting Intern: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an accounting intern position qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, if the role genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field as a minimum entry requirement. USCIS evaluates the position, not the 'intern' label. If the employer can document that the duties require specialized accounting knowledge at the degree level, the position can support an H-1B petition.
How do I find accounting employers that sponsor H-1B visas?
Use Migrate Mate to search for accounting intern roles filtered by employers with active H-1B LCA filing history. DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which firms have sponsored similar roles in the past. Public accounting firms, corporate finance teams at large companies, and financial services firms are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for accounting positions.
Does my accounting internship need to be full-time for H-1B eligibility?
H-1B status generally applies to full-time or part-time positions, but the petition must specify your hours and the corresponding prevailing wage level. Part-time H-1B petitions are permitted, though less common for internships. Your employer must still file an LCA certifying the correct wage for your actual hours and work location.
What happens to my H-1B if my accounting internship doesn't convert to a full-time offer?
Your H-1B status is tied to that specific employer and petition. If the internship ends without a conversion, your authorized period of stay ends with it. You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another status, or depart the country.
Does accounting qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B rules?
Accounting is recognized as a specialty occupation by USCIS when the position requires a degree in accounting or a directly related discipline. The O*NET profile for accountants and auditors lists it as a Job Zone 4 occupation requiring a bachelor's degree. Generalist roles that accept any business degree carry higher RFE risk and require stronger job duty documentation.
